Rich barely connected with Doug, who was late for play, at Foothill college. Doug was driving in the college entrance as Rich was leaving. Just a few seconds either way and they would have missed each other.
Rich started quickly by claiming a deuce at hole one and never looked back. Both stumbled at hole two, but Rich outplayed Doug on the hole. Doug and Rich traded scores for the next six holes, until Doug didn't play his upshot at hole nine very cleanly and handed Rich another stroke. After nine holes it was Rich 28, Doug 31.
Doug saved par with a long shot on hole ten to stay even with Rich. Hole ten proved tough for both players as Rich bogeyed and Doug made a double bogey. Coming back on hole eleven, Doug drove into a tree and they took a break throwing balls at his disc. Another double bogey for Doug. Doug's approach shot on hole thirteen disappeared. Rich and Doug soaked their boots through by tromping around high grass looking for his disc. After they gave it up for lost and were walking away, they noticed his disc past the hole! For the rest of the way, they matched strokes, until Rich got a deuce on the final hole, a make-up hole. Final scores, Rich - 57, Doug 63. Rich final claimed the first winner of the Millennium award.
