Reds Sweep Opening Weekend
One could feel the excitement when the final buzzer sounded and Eaton Boy's Basketball team had defeated Denver Christian 53-50 at D.C. The reason for the excitement was Eaton had never before beat D.C. on thier home court. The Reds were led by Ryan Troxel and Gary Sissler who scored 19 and 13 points respectively. Kyle Wiederspan controlled the boards pulling down 9 rebounds. Eaton used full court pressure to keep the Crusaders off balance offensibely and led 35-25 at half-time. Josh Drovdal and Gary Sissler drew three offensive fouls againts D.C's best player Brian VanEps which put him on the bench most of the second quarter. However, the Crusaders outscored the Reds 15-8 in the third quarter to pull within 3. Scoring was even in the fourth quarter with Jeff Hagar hitting a crucial bucket and Troxel sinking two free-throws in the last minute to sustain the win. D.C. was led by Mark Jansen with 21. Eaton's Junior Varsity defeated D.C. 49-31. Alex Nelson led all scoring with 15 points. The C team traveled to Fort Lupton where they were defeated, 65-58. As Faith Christian's very tall team enterd Eaton's gym Saturday night, it appered they might have an easy victory. However, the story of David and Goliath came alive with the Reds slaying the giant Eagles, 44-34. Eaton used their defensive pressure to keep the Eagles from getting the ball inside to thier big players. Great perimeter pressure by Ryan Troxel, Kurt Adams, Gary Sissler, Jeff Hagar, and Alex Ochoa created a total of 14 steals. Both teams went cold in the second half, only scoring 4 field goals a piece making it a low scoring game. Josh Drovdal and Kyle Weiderspan, both giving up 6 inches in height to their opponents, they were still able to control the boards collecting 7 and 5 rebounds prespectively. Offensively, the Reds were led by Troxel, 21 and Sissler 12. Even though the Reds were playing an up-tempo game, it was the Eagles who found themselves in foul trouble losing startes: Nick Barela, Josh Lindgren, and Jon Wallick. The Reds were 8 of 10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off the late Eagle rally. Faith Christian was led by Lindgren with 9. Eaton's Junior Varsity also defeated Faith Christian, 48-29. Matt Hagan scored 18 points and was 4 for 4 from the three-point range. The C team also defeated the Eagles led by Ty Staudinger's inside game and Jason Smith's defensive hustle. The week of December 9th the Reds will host Windor on Tuesday and Estes Park on Saturday.
