About the Fort Lee Fire Department

The Fort Lee Fire Department is comprised of four fire companies located in the different sections of town. Engine #1 is located on the east end of Main St., Engine/Rescue #2 is on Lemoine Ave. in the Coytsville section, Ladder Company #3 is located on the west end of Main St., and Engine Co. #4 is on Brinkerhoff Ave. in the Palisades section.

The Fort Lee Fire Prevention Bureau is located at 309 Main St. and is staffed by the Borough Fire Official as well as 4 full-time Fire Inspectors and secretary Cyndi Vida. In addition to their normal duties, the fire inspectors administer the Department's INVALID and TOT FINDER programs. The Communications Center is located within the Police Headquarters. Dispatchers serve as the Command Center for the East Bergen Mutual Aid Firefighters Association, which consists of Fort Lee as well as Cliffside Park, Palisades Park, Englewood Cliffs, Edgewater, Leonia, Ridgefield, Fairview, Tenafly, and Box 54, a canteen unit from Teaneck.

The department has approximately 135 volunteer firefighters augmented by 25 auxiliary, or junior firefighters. They are administered by the Chief of the Department, a Deputy Fire Chief, and a Batallion Fire Chief. Each company also has a Captain and 2 Lieutenants. Each member of the department is issued a personal pager which is activated with instructions in the event of an emergency, as well as personal protective equipment as required by law.

Fire department apparati consist of 5 Engines or Pumpers, 1 Heavy Duty Rescue truck, 2 aerial trucks, 1 high pressure foam unit, and a Support Service Van that was donated to the department and refurbished by volunteers.

The Fort Lee Fire Department is very active with Fire Safety and Education through the schools as well as condo, co-op, and all civic organizations. Some members are also involved with the Bergen County Juvenile Fire Prevention Program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, would like a fire department representative to speak with your group, or wish to register for the INVALID file or the TOT FINDER program, call 592-3584.

To report an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Joke of the Week

A 10-31 breaks out at Bonded Film. A second alarm goes out and mutual aid is called in from Cliffside, Edgewater, and Englewood. After over an hour, Chief Andrews announces "It has come to my attention that many valuable original films are in a vault at the center of the plant. Mayor Alter and the council will give $50,000 to the crew that can get them out."

Several crews try, but none can get through. Suddenly, FL1 calls in 10-16, comes roaring up Main St, and barrels straight into the center of the inferno. The other companies watch, as the old-timers hop off the rig and heroically extinguish the fire, saving the classic film reels.

Captain Porrino beams as he walks over to accept to accept the award. Upon turning the award over to his company, he asks the volunteers "What do you plan to do with the money?". The driver looks at him and answers, "The first thing we're going to do is fix the goddamn brakes on that truck."

Fire Safety

Holiday Precautions
If choosing a live Christmas tree, choose a fresh one.
If choosing an artificial tree, choose a fire-retardant one.
Keep your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, and space heaters.
Burning evergreens or wreaths in a fireplace or wood stove can flare out of control.
Use only non-flammable tinsel and decorations.
Burning wrapping paper in a fireplace can produce toxic fumes.
Keep candles away from trees, boughs, and curtains.
Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections.
Don't use outdoor lights indoors.
Turn off all lights and decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.

General Precautions
Install smoke detectors on every level of the home. Change batteries whenever moving the clocks forward or back.
Store fireplace ashes in a metal trash can.
Don't smoke in bed or when drowsy.
Don't let children use the toaster or microwave oven..
Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, garage, and basement.
Properly store turpentine, paint, antifreeze, and other hazmats.
Plug space heaters directly into wall sockets. Keep away from curtains and furniture, and where they cannot be knocked over.
Keep electric cords in good repair.
Don't overload outlets.
Clean out fireplaces and chimneys annually.
Keep a protective screen in front of the fireplace.
Keep electric blankets in good repair.
If you have a fire, call me at 9-1-1. If you wake me up, please make sure you have either a fire or a good explanation.
