Background Information
Mike
Vernon was born on February 24 1963 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He is
currently playing hockey with the Detroit Red Wings. Before playing with
the Red Wings he played for The Calgary Flames and led them to a Stanley
Cup appearance in 1986 and a Stanley Cup win in 1989. Although he didn't
win the Conn Smythe trophy for outstanding player he very well should of
won it (remember game 7 Vs Vancouver). After the Flames won the cup in
1989 they failed to advance to the second round of the play-offs, and to
date still havent advanced to the second round of the play-offs. In 1994
Calgary dealt Mike Vernon to Detroit for defencemen Steve Chiaison in part
of a major rebuilding process of the Flames. Detroit was in need for a
goaltender, after a early losses in the play-offs it came apparent that
Chris Osgood nor Tim Cheveldae could live up to play-off expectations.
When Mike came he split the duties with Chris Osgood in the regular season
and then took over all the play-off duties, he led them to the cup but
they were beat out by The New Jersey Devils in the final.
After
the play-offs Mike was in a dispute with The Red Wings over a contract,
after a couple of weeks of talking The Red Wings signed him to a two year
contract worth around 2.3 million a season. In the 95-96 season Mike again
split the duties with Chris Osgood, but had a mid season injury which kept
him out of the line-up for about a month. In the play-offs the duties fell
on Chris Osgood, Mike only played 3 games. The Red Wings got beaten out
by Colorado in the semi-finals. In the 1997 season it was almost certain
that Mike Vernon would have been dealt, he was playing very few games.
Towards the end of the season Chris Osgood got hurt which allowed Mike
to play in a lot of games in which he shined in. The fans seemed to get
on Mike side after he kicked the #%# out of Patrick Roy in late March.
When the play-offs rolled around Mike got the call and he played brilliantly,
he outplayed Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy, and Ron Hextall on the way of the
Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup. Mike was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy
as play-off MVP. After the 1997 seaon Mike was dealt to the San Jose Sharks
for some draft picks. Outside of hockey Mike likes to invests his time
into business opportunities such as a golf course or even a cattle farm
in Calgary. He tried a goaltender hockey school which he ran with his brother
but he didn't really seem to have the time to do all of it so it closed
it's doors. He donates time and money to a wide variety of charities such
as Children's Hospitals and Children's make a wish foundations. After he
is retired from hockey he hopes to spend more time with charities and hockey
schools. Mike is currently married and has a daughter. _________________________________________________________________________
