  1. really think we will be when expansion comes than we can re-visit the issue then.

  2. And most importantly, by lowering the number of games necessary at a position you increase the risk of a monster card player being used out of position from what he should be.  If a team has 4 good outfielders and one of them just happened to make 16 appearances at 3b….I don't want to see him play there.  Its not right, he played 90% of his games in the outfield ..thats where he belongs.

So anyway, what I did was take 5 positions, C, 1b, 2b, 3b, and SS while leaving out the outfield for two reasons: 1) There is no way anyone can be short starts in the outfield, and
  1. I didn't have a good source for games played in the outfield.  Mine had games played by LF, CF, and  RF and I wasn't about to try and go through and add them all up for each player.

Well, I took those five positions and listed ALL the players that played between 15 and 24 games there this past season.  In essence, these were the players that would now be allowed to start all their games at that position with the new relaxed restriction on games played.  I understand that the rule doesn't go into affect until next season, but I will make the assumption that there will be similar numbers next year.

First I'll give you the results, then I'll try to draw some conclusions.

I'll list the number of players that fall in the 15-24 games played range.  From that I eliminate everyone in that group that has that position as the first one on his card…..which means he can start there regardless of games played.  Next I'll eliminate everyone who has 100 lifetime at that position, making him eligible there anyway.  And lastly, I'll eliminate anyone who is innocuous, thus allowing him to start anywhere on his card as much as he wants.
What I am then left with will be the number of players this new rule actually allows into play.  I'll call these guys Xtra players.

CATCHERS:  4 players all with C as their first position.
                        Xtra players = 0

FIRSTBASE:  18 players…..9 with 1b as their first position
                                                2 with 100 lifetime
                        Xtra players = 7

SECONDBASE:  19 players……….11 with 2b as their first position
                  3 with 100 lifetime
                  3 are innocuous
                          Xtra players = 2

SHORTSTOP:  15 Players………………5 with SS as their first position
                                                                      5 with 100 lifetime
                                                                      2 are innocuous
                            Xtra players =3

THIRDBASE:    16 players………….6 with 3b as their first position
                                                              4 with 100 lifetime
                                                              2 are innocuous
                          Xtra players =4

So if you total this up, we have a grand total of 16 players added to the eligible list to start at a position on their card, and the great majority, 7 out of 16 of these come from firstbase….another position at which there is no great shortage of starts to begin with.

My conclusion is that I would have to disagree that this will have any affect on teams being short starts at a given position.
