Baltimore & the Fifteenth Amendment, May 19, 1870
Materials Derived From An Interactive Historical Investigation by David Troy © 1996

The James C. Beard LITHOGRAPH is the only one that is currently available in color.  The rich details point to a high degree of artistry, but the subjects themselves illustrate the history of slavery and of the 15th Amendment.

The 15th Amendment states:

Section 1: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on the account of race, color, or previous conditions of servitude.

Section 2: The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Question:

Explain in your own words, how you think this amendment would affect people.

Follow Up Lesson:
As a thoughtful application, teams will create a banner to represent a current day parade - including important people and events that effected that theme.

For example:
Fourth of July World Series (baseball)
Memorial Day World Cup (soccer)
Labor Day Whitbread (sailing race)
School Spirit Week First Night Annapolis
Black History Month
