| ABRAHAM LINCOLNwas elected president in November 1860 by a narrow margin. In the time between his election and his inauguration in March 1861, the first shot was fired in the Civil War -- the infamous attack at Ft. Sumter. Lincoln was not always well liked in Maryland.
