ABRAHAM LINCOLNwas elected president in November 1860 by a narrow margin. In the time between his election and his inauguration in March 1861, the first shot was fired in the Civil War -- the infamous attack at Ft. Sumter. Lincoln was not always well liked in Maryland. In 1860, he received only 2,294 votes in the Old Line State, while Breckinridge received 42,282 and Bell received 41,670. Source: The Negro in Maryland Politics, 1870-1912.
