National History
Delta Phi Epsilon was founded on March 17, 1917 at the New York University Law School. It was the first non-sectarian social sorority. Its colors are royal purple and pure gold and its mascot is the unicorn. Its flower is the lovely purple iris. DPhiE lives by the motto Esse Quam Videri (To be rather than to seem to be). It was founded by five women:
- Dorothy Cohen Schwartzman
- Ida Bienstock Landau
- Minna Goldsmith Mahler
- Eve Effron Robin
- Sylvia Steirman Cohn
The sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon abide by the 5 S's They are:
- Scholarship - Academic, Career and Lifestyle Skills and Planning
- Self - Physical, Emotional and Personal Development
- Service - Community and Societal Awareness and Involvement
- Sisterhood - Organizational Knowledge and Skills
- Social - Communication, Leadership and Social Development
The national magazine of Delta Phi Epsilon is the Triad. It is printed bi-annually and distributed to the 25,000+ members in the chapters which are located in both the United States and Canada. Its national philanthropies are:
- The Delta Phi Epsilon Scholarship Fund
- The National Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation
- The National Association of Anorexia and Associated Disorders (ANAD)
