St KildaI used to think that people who went on and on about their work were kind of pathetic really. You know, the ones who socialised with their workmates, referred each conversation in some way back to what they did at work, that type of thing. I always thought - "Get a life, you just work to live, not the other way round", but now that I've been working myself now, I've felt myself starting to be defined by my work, and having it occupy an increasingly more important space in my day to day life, and in my general demenour.
I honestly never thought you could get this type of reaction when the job was just a "job", and not really a career choice. It seems now however, as I start to do more and more things at work, to be asked to move away from the lower eschelons of "Customer Service Consultant", and work on more projects focussed at bringing in the campaigns, and structuring the work for the Consultants, I'm feeling a sense of job satisfaction, of being "selected" above others, of being sought after for my opinion and input. Of course there are those days and weeks, where I hate to go to work, and I really couldn't care less about it.
I sought some retail therapy with a friend today. This friend really knows how to shop. I'm more the type of person who knows what she wants, works out where to get it for the cheapest price, and goes and gets it, then leaves. I suffer anxiety in large open, crowded places so shopping centres can be traumatic, this I believe is where this whole strategy shopping thing came from. However Heloise showed me the pleasures of a leasurely afternoons' retail therapy, selecting items, from abundant racks, in clearance warehouses in Richmond, Melbourne's rag trade capital.
I paid 1/3 the retail price for clothes I would never have been able to afford.
Sated with new clothes, a happy work environment, and uni not looking nearly so scary as last week, I feel ready to take on the world. Perhaps I'll have a cola drink and surf.
