| Emily McNelley Member of the Year / Application Emily McNelley was an outstanding nurse who was primarily responsible for establishing the Student Nurses Association in Georgia (SNAG). That organization is now known as the Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS). The Member of the Year award was established in her name. This award aims to give recognition to the GANS member who is an inspiration to others, has creative ideas, communicates effectively, and who is seen as an asset to the field of nursing. It is recognized as a great honor to be chosen for this award. Each school chapter may submit only ONE candidate for the Emily McNelley Member of the Year Award. This award will be given to the nursing student who best meets the following criteria: The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in an ADN or BSN program within the state of Georgia. Active participation should be exhibited in NSNA and GANS activities, community service, and the present and future planning for student nursing. The applicant must have the ability to balance leadership, scholarship, chapter involvement, and community services. The applicant should embody the qualities of patience, enthusiasm, leadership, and a love of nursing. A letter of recommendation should be included, from a faculty member, GANS advisor or Dean from the applicant's school of nursing. The recipient of this award will receive $250 and a certificate. Advisor of the Year Award / Application This award is presented to an outstanding faculty advisor who has demonstrated excellent skills in providing guidance or advice to that school's Nursing Student Association. The recipient of this award will receive a plaque. Virginia M. Harmeyer Scholarship / Application The Dr. Virginia M. Harmeyer Scholarship is awarded to a member of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students each year. Dr. Virginia M. Harmeyer, Dean Emeritus at Valdosta State University School of Nursing, provided the initial funds for this award. In recognition for her generosity and support, the GANS Executive Board of 1985-1986 named this scholarship in honor of Dr. Harmeyer. This scholarship award is based on academic achievement, financial need, student leadership, and involvement in community activities related to health care. This award will be based upon goals to be accomplished in pursuit of a professional career in nursing. All of these factors will be equally weighted when judged, regardless of race, religion, sex, or national origin. This scholarship will be award to the nursing student who best meets the following criteria: The applicant must be enrolled in an ADN or BSN program within the state of Georgia. The applicant must show proof of membership to NSNA and GANS by sending a copy of their membership card. The applicant should document involvement in GANS activities, School of Nursing activities, other collegiate activities and any community activities (including church and/or civic club involvement). The applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA and must send an official SEALED school transcript with this completed application. The applicant should list any state honors, awards or offices held in any past organizations. The applicant should include reasons for applying for this scholarship. The applicant should include a letter of recommendation. A faculty member, GANS advisor or Dean should write the letter from the applicant's School of Nursing. The recipient of this scholarship will receive a certificate and cash award of $250 Mary Long BTN Scholarship / Application The Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS) is looking for a nursing student with outstanding qualities of leadership and peer relations. This individual should be with outstanding qualities of leadership and peer relations. This individual should be actively involved in Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) projects to promote the nursing professions. This individual should also display a positive attitude towards others and demonstrate enthusiasm in the field of nursing. This scholarship will be award to the nursing student who must meet the following criteria: The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in Georgia The applicant must show proof of membership to NSNA and GANS The applicant must be involved in state or national BTN activities. The applicant should include a letter of recommendation with the application. The letter of recommendation should be written by faculty member, GANS advisor or Dean from the applicant's School of Nursing. The recipient of this scholarship will receive a certificate and a cash award of $250 Karl Lipinski Scholarship / Application The Karl Lipinski Scholarship is awarded to a male member of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students. Karl Lipinski was the President of GANS in 1999-2000 and wished to establish this scholarship to encourage men to enter into the field of nursing; however, with his death in 2001, the creation of this scholarship was delayed. The GANS Executive Board of 2002-2003 named this scholarship in honor of Karl Lipinski. This scholarship award is based on academic achievement, student leadership, and involvement in community activities related to health care. This award will be based upon goals to be accomplished in pursuit of a professional career in nursing. This scholarship will be award to the male nursing student who best meets the following criteria: The applicant must be enrolled in an ADN or BSN program within the state of Georgia. The applicant must show proof of membership to NSNA and GANS by sending a copy of their membership card. Active participation should be exhibited in NSNA and GANS activities, community service, and the present and future planning for student nursing. The applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA and must send an official SEALED school transcript with this completed application The applicant should include a letter of recommendation. The recipient of this scholarship will receive a certificate and cash award of $250 Chapter of the Year Award / Application This award is reviewed based on multiple chapter activities, such as membership, community activities, and state/national involvement and honors. The recipient chapter of this award will receive a certificate and $250. Image of Nursing Award / Application The purpose of the Image of Nursing Award is to promote a positive image of nursing and demonstrate a significant contribution to the public and/or community. This is done through Image of Nursing projects, community health projects, legislative activities, or Breakthrough to Nursing projects. The award will be given to the School of Nursing chapter that best accomplishes these projects. The chapter should also demonstrate the appropriate use of the media coverage with the project or event. Media coverage may include print, television, internet, or radio. The recipient of this award will receive a certificate. Political Involvement Award / Application The purpose of the Political Involvement Award is to educate nurses and nursing students about legislation that impacts the nursing profession. This project should increase awareness on the local, state, and national levels while promoting communication and networking on legislative issues. The recipient of this award will receive a certificate. Financial Excellence Award / Application The purpose of the Financial Excellence Award is to create awareness on the part of school chapter about some of the elements that contribute to a financially sound chapter. The Financial Excellence Award will be given to the school chapter that has demonstrated excellence in increasing revenues and maintaining a balanced budget. The recipient of this award will receive a certificate. Outstanding BTN Project Award / Application This award will be given to the chapter with the best BTN project. The winning project will be chosen for originality, membership participation, promotion of GANS and the nursing profession, retention activities, and the percentage of nursing recruitment. Only one project per chapter will be considered for this award. The recipient for this award will receive a certificate. Outstanding Community Service Project Award / Application This award will be given to the chapter with the best community service project based on members� participation, promotion of health and illness prevention, promotion of GANS and the nursing profession and involvement. The recipient for this award will receive a certificate. Good Samaritian Purse Award This award is to recognize the chapter who has submitted the most filled shoeboxes for the Good Samaritan Purse project. All boxes are to be brought to the annual state convention for delivery. Each box must be accompanied with $5.00 to cover the cost of shipping (if this fee is paid by check it should be made out to Georgia Association of Nursing Students. Any box without the fee will be disqualified. The recipient for this award will receive a certificate. Newsletter of the Year Award / Application This award is to recognize and honor the most outstanding newsletter produced by a nursing school/department. Please send six (6) copies of your best newsletter. It must be an issue from October 2003 to September 2004. The recipient for this award will receive a certificate. Website of the Year Award / Application This award is to recognize and honor the most outstanding website produced by a nursing school/department. The recipient for this award will receive a certificate. Outstanding Scrapbook & Banner Award These awards will go to the chapter who is judged to have the best scrapbook/banner. The scrapbook/banner will be judged on originality, creativity, and design utilizing the convention's theme. Bring the scrapbook/banner to Convention so the Awards Committee can display and judge it prior to the Awards Banquet. Note: This criterion eliminates scrapbooks & banners previously entered at GANS State Conventions from eligibility. The recipient for these awards will receive a certificate. Precious Metal Awards These awards will recognize each chapter for the number of members it holds at the time of the awards deadline. School chapters with over 150 members will receive the Platinum award, 75-150 members will receive the Gold award, 25-74 will receive the Silver award, 1-24 will receive the Bronze award. Each chapter will receive a certificate for these awards. GANS Nursing Leadership Scholarship / Application This scholarship was founded by a 2004 BSN graduate, Brandy Seyller and was made possible through the relationships formed while being involved with the GANS organization. She realized that advocating for the rights of others needs to be more supported in Nursing. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote the efforts of a Nursing student who has shown exceptional leadership qualities that will become an asset to the future of Nursing. This scholarship award is in the amount of $2,000. |
