Rosalind, David and Petra are given encouragement as the reach the Wild Country, an area just before the Fringes. As they gallop through a farm there, they are spotted by the owner, but are not followed. They then enter into the forest once again and Petra resumes her communication with the Sealand woman. It seems to be that the Sealand woman wants to come rescue the Group. The importance is not on the Group, but upon Petra. Both the Sealand woman and the people of Waknuk wanted to take Petra alive, but for two very different reasons. The Sealand woman wants Petra alive because in her culture telepathic powers are the norm and Petra is a new breed of telepaths, much stronger than all the others. Petra will be an asset to Sealand. The Sealand woman seems to be surprised that telepaths could exist among such a primitive culture such as Waknuk.
As night breaks Rosalind, David and Petra find themselves truly in the Fringes. As soon as David ascertains this, someone attacks them.
