Unprepared, David is awoken in the middle of the night by Petra. Before Petra can explain why, Rosalind cuts in and tells David that he must take Petra and quickly leave Waknuk. Sally and Katherine have already been discovered. David quickly gets Petra ready and they leave by horseback to meet up with Rosalind. They find Rosalind waiting for them by the side of the road with her fathers great-horses. Her mother had helped her pack and leave. David secretly wonders if his own mother would be glad that Petra and he had escaped.
To help with David, Rosalind and Petras escape, Michael has decided to join the Group that will go in search of them; that way he can keep them updated. During the escape to the Fringes, Rosalind murders a man. The others do their best to assure her that she had to do it to ensure their own survival.
Suddenly the Group is blinded by Petras distress signal. We learn that they, the group that had taken Sally and Katherine, had broken Katherine. Sally and Katherine had revealed David, Rosalind and Petra. But they downplayed the limits of their telepathic range. Michael vows to kill them for what they had done to Katherine.
Michael breaks into everyones thoughts, explaining that the norms are terrified of them because they pose a greater threat than any previous deviation, because they can go undetected. They can think together without words or machinery, and could outwit the norms at any time.
An amazing discovery is made in this chapter; the arrival of a message from a place called Sealand. (New Zealand, but the others wouldnt believe Petra that it was a z and not a s.) Petra tells them what Sealand looks like and David is astonished; it is the city from his childhood dreams. Petra is the only one that can communicate with this Sealand lady, as she is too far away for the others to contact.
