A word about my links:  The links to book titles on this page will take you to Amazon.com where you can buy the books recommended here at a discount and have them delivered to your door. You will need a credit card to do this; it is done on a secure server which encrypts your number so no one else can get it. I've done it many times and had no problems.

The first of the Earthsea series by a master of science fiction, this book straddles the science fiction/fantasy boundry. It introduces Sparrowhawk (Ged) tracing his life from his birth to his coming of age as a wizard and coming to terms with the darkness within.  It is one of the best SF books ever written.  If you haven't read it, buy it today!

This is the third of the Earthsea novels. Sparrowhawk must go to the land of death to save Earthsea from a wizard who is persuading people that death-in-life is a form of immortality.  It will take all of Sparrowhawk's power to stop him; it may even take his life.

Tenar, now a widow with grown children, must adjust to major changes in her new life. She adopts a gypsy child who has been raped, burned, and left for dead. She is reunited with characters from the earlier novels, Ogion, Arren, Kalessin and, of course, Sparrowhawk.

This novel takes place in  the future in a society like the old Soviet Union. It deals with the difficulty of the individual in society. It's one of Le Guin's more "earth-bound" novels. It's a little depressing, but still a great read.

For those who like novels set in a well-developed alien world, Left Hand of Darkness is a wonderful novel. The aliens are empathetically imagined and reveal a great deal about us.
