This study offers a semi-paleographic edition as well as an analysis of the lexicon and translation process of the Italian version of Alfonso X of Spain's Libros del saber de astronomia. The transcription is conservative. Only punctuation and capitalization have been altered for ease of reading. The language analysis focuses on the nature of the Italian translation, as well as its physical and textual similarities and dissimilarities to the Spanish original. Principal linguistic features of the target language are compared to those of its Spanish source.
Chapter I provides a brief historical introduction to the role of Alfonso X, El Sabio played in disseminating astronomical science throughout Europe. A section devoted to the examination of the Alfonsine Castilian Spanish original concludes the chapter.
Chapter II takes up the Italian translation process itself, and is divided into three principal parts, the first being a detailed codicological comparison with the Spanish original. The two codices are collated, with physical similarities and discrepancies being noted. Part two constitues a textual comparison with the Castilian original of the Libros, and details both likenesses and differences between them. Part three focuses on the nature of the translation process, and compares formulaic phrases with those of the Spanish original. Particular attention is given to the creation of Italian neologisms, which are then documented in the accompanying glossary of technical and novel terms.
Chapter III not only introduces additional pertinent historical information, but documents as well the editorial criteria employed in the edition. The historical context in which the Italian translation was made is discussed in an effort to locate its possible place of origin, and the value of the translation is examined in the light of its importance relative to the textual tradition.
Chapter IV constitutes the edition of the text of the Italian Libro.
Chapter V constitutes a lexicon of technical terms, dialectalisms, and neologisms found in the Italian text.
A selected bibliography concludes the work.
