In one of the most remarkable military maneuvers in History, Israel was miraculously able to more than triple its size, in a war against three bordering enemy nations, all within three days. The most notable of what they obtained was; a unified Jerusalem, something they had longed for from the beginning; the Sinai, which insured a buffer zone, definitive ability to use the canal, and enabled them to have their first peace treaty; the Golan, which ensured water to the country, very fertile land, and had THE lookout mountain, from which A Jordanian could stand on, and spy on just about any part of Israel; and the West bank.
If you notice, there aren't comas after the West Bank. I have spent six weeks in a Mechina (quasi Yeshiva) there. First, I see it as somewhat of a miracle that they were able to get over this terrain in six days. That's remarkably impressive, in and of itself. But, the thing is, that there is nothing there. At all.
I mean there's settlements, and the such. There's even a factory that produces windshields, but not much else. There's a little green. Well, a lot, compared to most Arab owned land, but by Israel's standards, not that much. It would seem to this ignorant observer, that Israel did not let its citizens in, on their plan.
When they conquered the land, they didn't even bother to change the name. The West Bank is on the eastern end of Israel. It's name is due to the fact that it is the occupied western bank of Jordan.
Now, a great deal of money has NOT been spent to grow the West bank. It has been settled by groups, such as B'nei Akiva, who claim that the only true aliya is aliya chalutz, becoming a settler, as oppose to just Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat, etc.
Therefore, people live there. They go to work every day in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat, etc, but they live in the settlement. It's almost like a crappy suburb.
It's clear though, once somebody removes their Zionistic glasses, that Israel did not intend to settle it. It was meant to be a bargaining piece. Jerusalem, the Golan, and the like, they were to be ISRAEL. But as well, Israel wounded the three main neighbors, taking Sinai from Egypt, the Golan from Syria, and, yes, the West Bank from Jordan. We gave back Sinai. Gaza was given to Arafat. The West Bank is ours though. We didn't need to give it back, Jhas signed a peace treaty.
That creates a problem for Israel. The country that we need to make peace with right now, is Syria. We ain't gonna give back (I hope to God) the Golan or Jerusalem. They want to have nothing to do with Palestinians. We can't exactly give them the West Bank, it doesn't even touch them.
The only thing I see, and I say this half jokingly, is we tell all the Arabs that they still permitted to have their territory, but if they could please move it to the West Bank. That way, Syria could have its land back, and besides the fact that the world would see the PLO in the same light as Native Americans, everybody would be happy.
But that ain't gonna happen. We have nothing to present as concessions to Syria. As it is, it seems that Israel's present vietnamesque situation may be due to a combination of overzealous Zionists who weren't thinking, and a government who didn't want to let other people see its hand.
