My Story

Luciana
I got my first American Bulldog, my female Luciana, in 96' and I was fascinated by the working ability these dogs had. Luciana or Lucy was sired by Mad Maxx, a Sure-Grip dog and her dam was Candy Bear, a Hines (Coffee's Cup of LeRoy) and a Sure-Grip (Smootch Kruegger) cross. I really lucked out with my first dog. I was new to the breed, and I was able to get a good working dog. When I went to pick a pup, I knew I wanted a female. So I separated all of the females into one kennel, then I walked around and checked out their personalities. Out of the five there were only two who ran right up to my shoes and started biting the laces. Out of those two, Lucy was far more aggressive and she hung on to my shoe laces for the longest before losing interest.

Baloo
I then contacted some people in my area who also owned this great breed. They were Dave Putnam and Fred Dutton, they greeted me and my dog Lucy and looked over her pedigree. It turned out that Dave owned a sister to Candy Bear, Bully, this is Lucy's aunt and they seem to have similar personalities. I then got to see their American Bulldogs, first I saw Belle (Tyson X Molque) I was very impressive she was full of color and a solid 85 lbs., (my dog Lucy was 50 lbs at the time) she was the biggest female American Bulldog I had seen. Then Fred brought out his dog and I mean dog, it had to be 100+ lbs. I was shocked to find out that this was also a female named Maxine, a double bread Woody granddaughter. She was awesome and as soon as I saw some of the puppies from the first litter,(Hammer x Maxine) which weighed from 88-128 lbs., 5 out of the 8 dogs had their hips x-rayed and submitted to PennHip, they all passed. I quickly put a deposit down on her next litter. Since I had shown interest in working my first dog, I was lucky enough to be offered the pick male from the litter (second pick already had a deposit on it), but its not uncommon for the pick dog to be held for working homes. So finally after waiting five months, I brought home my Hammer x Maxine puppy, who I named Baloo. This dog grew like a weed, at 5 months old Baloo was 87 lbs. He didnt stop there he continued to past 100 lbs. in no time, and thats where the needle on my scale goes off the numbers, so I have no idea what he weighs now.

Gypsy
Now after educating myself a bit about the breed I found it was hard to get a non Sure-Grip or non Hines American Bulldog in Northern CA, they were mainly crosses of the two. So I started to research out of state breeders that had other proven American Bulldogs that were not related to and did not come from Sure-Grip or Hines (Woody or Country Boy x Snow Bird). So I decided to get a dog from Rode Hawg Kennels, I contacted Larry Koura by e-mail, and continued to e-mail him with questions on his upcoming breedings. I decided to get a female from the repeat breeding of Ultimate Nightmare (Ully) x Lola. And a few months later I went to the air port and picked up Gypsy Horne Griffin. She had a nasty trip over, seems some ultra bright people at Delta decided to put her on a non-direct flight, after I had made sure that she was booked on a direct flight from Chicago to San Francisco (5 hrs.). She went to Salt Lake for a few hours and then went to S.F., it took 12 hours, I was pissed. Thankfully she was healthy, she just needed some water. Needles to say Gypsy was extremely happy to get out of her crate.
