Hobdy, a member of both the SWAC and Louisiana Sports Halls of Fame, served as Athletic Director at GSU from August 1988 until September of 1996, following a 30-year coaching career. Under his guidance, the Grambling Tigers compiled a 567-287 basketball record and won the NAIA national championship in 1961. A native of Winnfield, Hobdy played football and basketball under Coach Eddie Robinson at Grambling and was a baseball player for Dr. Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones in the 1940's.
EX-GSU COACH HOBDY DIES Fred Hobdy, the winningest coach in Louisiana collegiate basketball history, died Tuesday morning (12/8/98) in his home after a lengthy illness.
