Education is as old as humanity and humanity never stops learning. Grambling State University's College of Education is committed to lifelong teaching and learning. The goal of the college is to create an environment where scholarship is encouraged, supported, realized and consistent with Grambling State University's criteria of excellence, yet reflective of the special demands of basic and best practice. The College of Education offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in two academic departments: Teacher Education and Health, Physical Education and Recreation; graduate degrees are offered in the Department of Educational Leadership. Auxiliary service units add support through research, community service, program development, consultation, technical assistance and professional services. The concept central to the purpose of the College of Education is to effect quality teaching and learning in elementary, secondary, pre-school and non-school settings. Students are prepared for teaching, administration and leadership roles in education. The College of Education contributes to imparting the responsibility of making sure that human beings, from childhood through adulthood, are well educated.
On a more fundamental level, the purpose of the College of Education is to expand upon the Grambling State University motto, "A Place Where Everybody is Somebody". This motto embraces faculty, students and the children, youth and adults whom they serve. This vision includes a focus on opportunity in our cultural environment - an environment to be experienced by all, an environment inclusive of diversity, ethnicity and race.
The responsibility of educating members of our society falls primarily on the shoulders of teachers and schools. Now more than ever before, our society recognizes education to be beneficial, not only to individuals, but also to society as a whole. For example, an educated person is far more likely to be employed. Being educated helps people adjust to change and to simply get more out of life by increasing one's knowledge and understanding of the world. An educated person is better able to develop a principled character. And, an educated person is able to develop the citizenship skills that will contribute positively to a society. When you consider these advantages of learning, having a good education becomes invaluable. Similarly, having a good teacher or being a good teacher is priceless.
The College of Education provides a solid foundation rooted in the philosophy and mission of Grambling State University. It is here that students begin not only building their career, but also contributing to the challenge of shaping the minds and character of our future leaders.
As a graduate of the College of Education, you will be equipped with a knowledge and practice base that will enable you to elevate the promise of individual lives by "Creating New Horizons" and effecting positive change in our society.
