Copying Images from a Web Document
There are two main types of image files found on the Internet. These are .GIF (Compuserve Graphics Interchange) and .JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). Gif image files are usually drawings or animations whereas photographs are usually stored in .jpg format.
Both these image formats are compressed in a special way which is called "lossy" all this means is that when an image is saved in this way it results in a very small file size but the image is not as perfect as it would be in another format (bitmap for example). A photograph scanned and saved as a bitmap image could be as much as two or three megabytes whereas the same photograph saved as a jpeg file would only be a few kilobytes.
As a rule of thumb the larger the graphics file the longer it takes to download on to your screen, as you will find when you come to web pages containing lots of graphics which seems to take forever to load.
