<H3 ALIGN=center>Introduction to the University</H3>

          Ziauddin Medical University is a non-profit degree awarding private university established in 1995 through a legislative Act of the Sindh Provincial Assembly (Sindh Act No. VI of 1995). After the approval from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), the University established Ziauddin Medical College which commenced its first academic session in April 1996. Presently three batches of students are enrolled in its MBBS degree program.

          The University campus and its affiliated institutions are spread in different localities of Karachi. They are the following:

          The new campus is located in Clifton which functions as the main teaching learning center for its Medical College. Development work that is presently being carried out in the Clifton campus will include university offices, college facilities, a 600 bed hospital equipped with diagnostic facilities.

          • A 300 bedded teaching hospital (Dr. Ziauddin Hospital) in North Nazimabad.
          • A 50 bedded cancer hospital in North Nazimabad.
          • A 125 bedded KDLB (Karachi Dockyard Labour Board) Hospital.
          • An 80 bedded Maternal and Child Health Center at Nazimabad.
          • A Community-based PHC clinic in Sikanderabad.
          • A Community-based PHC clinic in Chanesar Goth.

          University Hospital

          Dr. Ziauddin Hospital is located in the center of the city, and functions as the Ziauddin Medical University Hospital and serves the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and the nursing students as the main University Hospital for the purpose of clinical training and research.

          It is a 300 bedded hospital equipped with a wide range of latest sophisticated diagnostic facilities including MRI, CAT Scan and Radioactive Isotope Imaging techniques in addition to conventional X-ray and a comprehensive Pathology Laboratory.

          This Hospital has received recognition by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for House Jobs. In addition, in 1994 the Hospital received PMDC permission to start MD/MS and diploma programmes. The Institute launched its MD/MS programmes in several disciplines. Several candidates after fulfilling appropriate requirements have been registered for postgraduate training programmes including MS and MD in various disciplines.

          In addition the Hospital has received recognition from the College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPSP) for Fellowship and Membership in several disciplines.

          The University offers a five year undergraduate programme (MBBS) and postgraduate degree/diploma programmes in various disciplines of Health Sciences. In addition, the School of Nursing is engaged in diploma and postgraduate education.

          Nursing Education:

          Ziauddin School of Nursing offers a three year General Nursing course which essentially follows the curriculum guideline provided by the Pakistan Nursing Council.
          Nursing students training includes experiences in classroom, laboratory and ward. Classes commence in September and new students are required to pass the School Preliminary Examination in each discipline prior to continuation of studies. At the end of each year, students take the Sindh Nurses Board Examination
