The transition of Dr. Ziauddin's envision into reality started in the late 1950's when his daughter Dr. Ejaz Fatima and his son in law Dr. Tajammul Husain, started a small maternity home in Nazimabad. This small establishment over the years, has now turned into a busy 80 bedded hospital and is now catering to the densely populated area of Nazimabad.
It was in 1968 that the second step was taken in expanding the project. Dr. Ziauddin Hospital Trust was established by the family of Dr. Ziauddin. The same year this Trust established Dr. Ziauddin Hospital, the second hospital in North Nazimabad. This Hospital is now a 300 bedded hospital. This hospital caters to a large population belonging to all socio-economic groups thus providing opportunities to students to gain knowledge and skills on assessing and evaluating wide range of problems brought in tertiary care setting. The hospital has kept itself abreast with recent advancement in science and technology and is equipped with sophisticated equipment necessary to diagnose and manage problems effectively and efficiently.
In August 1994 the Government of Sindh through an Ordinance (No. XVII of 1994) granted permission for the establishment of Dr. Ziauddin Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. By the virtue of this Ordinance the Institute could grant its own postgraduate degrees and diplomas.
In May 1995 the Trust applied to the PMDC for permission to start an undergraduate MBBS degree programme in Karachi. The PMDC granted the necessary permission. It was in October 1995 that the Sindh Assembly passed an Act (No. VI of 1995) for the establishment of Ziauddin Medical University.
The Trust created Ziauddin Medical College in the metropolitan city of Karachi. The College commitment is to provide Community-Oriented Medical Education to meritorious students. After a comprehensive admission process, the first batch of 55 students began their studies from 13th April 1996. The second batch started their classes in December, 1996 while the academic session of the third batch commenced in December, 1997.
In the same period, the University has established a partnership with the Community leaders of Sikanderabad, as well as with the Government for supporting an urban health center in Chanesar Goth. The overall purpose is to raise the health status of the concerned population by providing services, health education, and support in improvement of public health facilities.
