Judge Coordinator: Paul R. Lisborg


MUSIC

Dr. Jerryl Davis
A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Jerryl Davis is a Professor of Woodwinds at Jacksonville State University. His Music Education background includes: early training in clarinet and oboe in the Hopkinsville High School "Band of Tigers" under James Fern; undergraduate membership in the "Racer Marching Band" and the BM degree (1967) from Murray State University; plus all graduate degrees -- the MM (1968), the Performer's Certificate in Oboe (1974), and the DMA degree (1977) from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Davis was a lecturer in Music at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and managed the University Orchestras under Dr. Karel Husa from 1968 to 1975. He has arranged music for Cornell's "Big Red Marching Band," and for the 300-plus members of JSU's nationally known "Marching Southerners." Dr. Davis has served as principal oboist for the Huntsville, Montgomery, and Rome symphony orchestras. Dr. Davis is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Dennis Laorenza
Dennis Laorenza is currently a music consultant and clinician, rehearsing both concert and marching bands throughout the Southeast. Before becoming a clinician, he was a high school band director in the Pinellas County school system for seven years. His marching, concert, and jazz ensembles were consistently among the best in the state of Florida. Mr. Laorenza is currently Brass Caption Head with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps. He has also been the assistant caption head (Brass) with the Suncoast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps, and the 1993 World Champion Cadets of Bergen County.


MARCHING

Ron Coleman
Ron Coleman has taught and adjudicated since 1981. He has designed for competitive band, drum corps, and indoor guard since 1983. He was the Head Visual Tech for the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1991 to 1997. He is the president of the Southern States Judges Association, and he designs and teaches for marching bands in South Florida. Mr. Coleman currently lives in South Florida and works as a professional photographer.

Sid Hearn
Sid Hearn is an experienced participant and instructor in both the drum corps and marching band genres. Originally from Sheffield, Alabama, Sid is currently attending the University of North Alabama, majoring in Music Education. A trumpet player, he performs on many occasions with the various ensembles at UNA and beyond. He marched as lead mellophone in the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps, Dubuque, Iowa, in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. His teaching experience includes marching and music performance consultant work, show design, private trumpet instruction, and he has worked on the visual staff of the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps.


GENERAL EFFECT

Kenneth G. Bodiford
Ken Bodiford is the Director of the Jacksonville State University Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the nationally known "Marching Southerners." He also teaches conducting, trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Mr. Bodiford received his BS in Music Education from JSU, and his Masters in Music Education and Conducting from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. After completing his MM degree, Mr. Bodiford served as interim director of the Marching and Concert Bands at ECU. Immediately following his interim position at ECU, Mr. Bodiford was hired as Director of Bands at Kecoughtan HS, Hampton, Virginia. During his tenure at Kecoughtan, the band program grew from 75 to 240 members, and the Wind Ensemble received all Superior ratings at all district festivals in the Grade VI division. The band was declared "Honor Band" for the state of Virginia in 1994. During his last year at Kecoughtan, the Marching Band was chosen as one of 5 bands from across the U.S. to perform at the USF&G Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Bodiford is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Paul R. Lisborg
Paul Lisborg is a 1984 graduate of Jacksonville State University with a major in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Music. While a member of the "Marching Southerners" from 1980-83, Mr. Lisborg served as trumpet section leader and drum major. He was a founding member of the 1978 Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps. He is also a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity for Men in Music. Mr. Lisborg has assisted in the development of visual programs for numerous high school bands throughout the Southeast. During the 1997 season, Mr. Lisborg served as an instructor and clinician for 12 different high school and university bands. He assisted in the design of the GMEA drum major adjudication sheet. Currently, Mr. Lisborg is the assistant director of Bravo Winterguard of Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Lisborg is a software developer and resides in Newnan, Georgia.


COLOR GUARD

Rodney Bailey
Rodney Bailey earned his BA in English from Jacksonville State University in 1994. He is currently the color guard instructor for the JSU "Marching Southerners" and the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps. He has served as the director of the Central Carroll high School Winter Guard, and has assisted other area high school fall and winter guards. Mr. Bailey is a JSU Graduate Student, and is a member of the Phi Delta Kappa professional graduate organization.


AUXILLIARY

Karen A. Davis
Karen Davis is a former Crimsonette from the University of Alabama. A Heart of Dixie halftime camp staff member for many years, she is the choreographer of the nationally-televised Florida Citrus Bowl, and the director of the award-winning Bama Babes. She also serves as director of the NBTA Alabama State Twirling & Dance Competition, and has coached many dance and twirling champions. She is the mother and coach of the reigning Miss Majorette of Alabama and Miss Majorette of the South, Whitney Davis. Ms. Davis judges nationally, adjudicating such events as the 1996 Grand National Dance Twirl finals at Notre Dame University. She holds a Masters degree from the University of Alabama, and is employed in Education Administration. She resides in Clanton, Alabama.


PERCUSSION

Clint Gillespie
Clint Gillespie is currently the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Jacksonville State University Band and Percussion programs. Before coming to JSU, he was a band director in the Dekalb County (Georgia) School System. Mr. Gillespie earned his BS in Music Education from JSU. He has been a percussion instructor for the DCI World Finalist Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps form 1992 through 1997. He has been active as a percussion teacher, adjudicator, and clinician, and has arranged and written music for many successful high school and college marching band programs throughout the Southeast. Mr. Gillespie is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.


DRUM MAJOR

Ricky L. Walker
Ricky Walker is a former drum major for Fayette County High School, Fayetteville, Georgia, the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & BUgle Corps, and the JSU "Marching Southerners." He is a respected instructor and adjudicator of field conductors in the Southeast, and is actively involved in defining the drum major's role in contemporary marching ensembles. He also assisted in the development of the GMEA-approved adjudication sheet for drum majors. Rick is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a graduate of Jacksonville State, and lives in Newnan, Georgia.
