November 8, 2007 Jurcovan Dorel Dear Mr. Jurcovan: On behalf of the Portland Rose Festival, I'd like to thank you for your initiative in contacting us and suggesting a link between our annual festival and the city of Timisoara, Romania through our mutual celebration of the queen of flowers, the rose. The Portland Rose Festival is proud of its reflection of international culture during our major events and activities, and we've found this element has added both diversity and richness to our celebration. We have strong ties to Portland's Sister Cities Associations, and annually feature entries from Taiwan, Japan, Estonia, Mexico and the Philippines in our Grand Floral Parade. In recent months, we have been successful in establishing a 'diplomatic' agreement with two other international rose cities -- Te Awamutu, New Zealand and Karlovo, Bulgaria -- in hopes of establishing opportunities for mutual marketing and cultivation of potential travelers. Next spring, a local Portlander will visit the Karlovo Rose Festival as part of a promotion we produced during our Grand Floral Parade, with the cooperation of our official airline, Lufthansa German Airlines. We would like to investigate the possibility of having a local Rose Festival sanctioned event organizer, the Oregon Society of Artists, work with you on a juried art contest that could be part of their June event, the Rose Art Show. This artistic bridge could only add to each of our cities' celebrations, as well as enhancing the enjoyment and involvement of Portland's large Romanian population in our annual festival. I will contact the Oregon Society of Artists and find out their level of interest. In the meantime, I hope we can establish an official friendship and 'rose connection' between us. Please pass on to Timisoara city officials our desire to make this connection, and thank you again for your inspiration and initiative. Sincerely,
Marilyn Clint Associate Executive Director cc: Mark McGirr, President Jeff Curtis, Executive Director
