INLA claims killing of Derry man
    8 April 1998

The republican INLA ("Irish National Liberation Army")
today claimed responsibility for the shooting last
night of Derry man Trevor Deeney. The tiny group which
is opposed to the peace process claimed the dead man
was a leading member of the Loyalist Volunteer Force
    (LVF) murder gangs.

Mr Deeney was shot dead in the Waterside area after he
returned from work at a car components plant on the
    outskirts of Derry.

Mr Deeney was a brother of Jeffrey Deeney, who is
serving a life sentence for his part in the Rising Sun
bar massacre, when loyalist Ulster Freedom Fighters
gunmen shot dead seven people at Greysteel, County
    Derry, in 1993.

The INLA has killed three people since Christmas, when
they killed LVF leader Billy Wright in the H-Blocks.

Since then it has killed two more people -- a loyalist
    paramilitary and an ex-RUC policeman.
