Hr. Ms. Tromp

Named after a famous Lieutenant Admiral: Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, who was the commanding officer of the Dutch fleet for sixteen years (1637-1653) during several battles.

The building of Hr.Ms. Tromp started at 1936 at the 'NV Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij' in Amsterdam. In service 1938.

During WWII the Hr.Ms. Tromp did many actions against the Japanese fleet. On 20 February at Badoeng Street she was badly damaged. And repaired in Australia. The model shows the ship after the reconstruction work at the Australian Dockyard. Using some copies of the original reconstruction drawings.

This ship has seen a lot of action during WWII. At times she was with the US 7th fleet and at times under British command. The Japanese claimed on 5 occasions that this ship was sunk. Reason for the Australians to give it the nickname: 'The Ghostship'.

The colors of the model are of the US 7th fleet.

This ship is considered to be the most successful warship of the Royal Netherlands Navy in WWII. And also as one of the best designs of pre-war naval shipbuilding in the Netherlands.

Based on historical plans of the National Shipping Museum, Amsterdam.

The project started at June 1997. Eventually it was planned to build the ship as she was in 1938. As the designers had made it look like. However after some time it was decided to build it as she really was during wartime, as she went famous.

The get the correct information was a enormous task, because the ship was rebuild and modified several times in WWII.

Here the models shows the ship at the end of 1942, under US command. When the ship shifted to British command there was a completely new paint job to do also.
