1933

Hr. Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau

In April 1933 this gunboat came into service with the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship was mainly build for the role as stationship in the West (Netherlands Antilles).

Somewhere in the end of the thirties, the ship was reconstructed. Among several minor modifications a large bordes was added with two anti-aircraft guns.

In May 1940, during the German attack on the Netherlands the ship was ordered to the Wadden Sea near Kornwerderzand where she succesfully countered the attack.

On 14th of May 1940, while trying to escape to Great Britain, the ship was sunk by aircraft.

Based on plans of the Historical branche of the Ministery of Defence.

The model shows the ship as she was in May 1940.

Reconstruction plans where not available, so this job had to be done by studying photographs and some mathametics.

The aft gun was salvaged from the wreck after the war. Nowadays its on display in Den Helder. A nice collection of pictures where taken of this historical object in order to build these for the model.
