Common Cinquefoil

Potentilla simplex

This member of the Rose family is very similar to its close relative the Dwarf Cinquefoil (Potentilla canadensis). (The two can be distinguished by the fact that the common cinquefoil has longer, more elongate leaves, and the enitre leaf has serrations.) It has a radially 5 parted leaf, prostrate stems, rooting at the nodes with flowers and leaves rising from runners on separate stalks. Runners range from 6 to 20 inches. Plants frequent fields and woodlands. Flowers bloom from April to June.
