The following are new sections in the "construction" phase. I'm entering and formatting these sections. There may be some spelling, format errors.

Coffee

Coffee connoisseurs enjoy Hawaii for its tropical delights - especially its Kona brew. Hawaii is the only American state where coffee is commercially grown.

Kona has a full-bodied flavor, a fine aroma and a "winey" taste. While most coffees available in the United States are blends from several countries, Kona is one of the few types that is "straight."

Kona coffee is grown on the Big Island of Hawaii. The long western slopes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the tallest peaks in the Pacific, comprise the district of Kona where Hawaii's coffee takes its name. The comination of porous volcanic soil and the shelter of lofty mountains creates perfect agricultural conditions. As a result, Kona has grouwn coffee for nearly two centuries.

Coffee seeds orgionally arrived in the islands on visiting ships. After many unsuccessful attempts over the years to grow coffee on the different islands, plants thrived only in Kona.

According to a Hawaiian Guide Book written in 1875 by Henry M. Whitney, editor of the Hawaiian Gazette,
"Respecting coffee we may say that there is no more delicious coffee in the world than that grown in Kona, Hawaii, when properly cured."
Today, gourmet coffee drinkers still agree.

Hula

According to ancient Hawaiian myth, Hi'iaka danced the first hula on the Big Island of Hawaii. She was the youngest and favorite sister of Pele, the volcano goddess.

Hi'iaka's friend, Hopoe, a mortal and poet, taught the beautiful maiden the Hawaiian dance. She swayed her arms, legss and body to the rhythm of the waves and trees.

But the dance had many opponents throughtout the mid-nineteenth century. Christian missionaries and Queen Ka'ahumanu, Hawaii's first prominent Christian convert, tried to ban hula. Hawaiians performed the dance privately until its revival by King David Kalakaua.

In 1893, pro-annexation american forces overthrew the monarchy. Once again, the dancing ceased. but hula reemerged in 1906 witht he support of Nathaniel Emerson in his "Unwritten Literature of Hawaii."

Today, hula remains an improtant part of Hawaiian culture. Kumu (masters) teach halau (schools) the various tecniquies and traditions of the dance - just as Hopoe instructed the young Hi'iaka.
