Parents keep your Children Safe
Preparing children for possible dangers in their lives and community can prevent possible high risk situations.
Parent awareness and
alertness can also minimize possible dangerous or "high risk" situations.
Children need to learn about safety in the home and community. They need to know
appropriate reactions to possible dangers.Parents have to "street proof" their children without causing panic
or paranoia. Local Police, RCMP, and Child Find have the resources to help
parents deal with this very important topic.
Parents should consider the fallowing:
1. Children should never be left alone in a car, a public place, grocery cart, baby carriage
in parks, at fairs, e.t.c.
2. Children should be taught as early as appropriate their name, address, phone number,
area code, province or state, e.t.c.
3. Children should be taught how to use a telephone to contact parents, police, 911, e.t.c.
4. Children should be encouraged to play with friends and travel with others to parks,
playgrounds, school or the store.
5. Parents should meet the parents of their children`s friends.
6. Children should be taught to always let their parents know where they are going
and who with.
7. Children should be taught how to locate a policman or other authority figure (such as a security guard)
or a store clerk, in case they get separated from their parent.
8. Children should be taught not to answer the door when home alone or a parent naps
and especially not to allow strangers in the home at any time.
Caution, do not leave children under 12 alone at home.
9. Children should be taught to tell people who phone, that Daddy is sleeping
and can`t answer the phone, when they are home alone.
10. Children should never accept a ride from a stranger or be too close to an
unfamiliar car.
11. Children should be taught that if they are in trouble to go to the next
BlockParent HOME and tell them to call for help.
They should also be made aware of those locations.
12. If a child is lost, and has no money, please teach them not to enter
any house of a stranger who promises to help. To ask them to call the police or a parent
and wait by the Street on the sidewalk.
Those are just a few suggestions for parents to street proof their Child, think of other ones,
like a "secret code" before they go with anyone.
Please be very careful how you teach the children, in most cases of
child sexual abuse 85%-90%, the child knew the agressor.
The vunerability of children and youth with regard to sexual abuse is increased further
by what has been expected of them traditionally.
like: children must obey adults
children must not assert their own needs and wants
children must not challenge adult authority
Statisitcs from the Ontario Child Abuse Register indicate:
83% of the children abused where between the ages of 9 -16
55% where age 12 -16 years
28% where age 9 -11 Years
17% where age 8 - and younger.
Remember, only 10% - 15% of children where abused by a stranger
the rest ist Incest Relationships, Other Blood Relatives, Guardianship positions
other Family Members, Persons with positions of Trust, Friends/Acquaintances e.t.c.
When your childs behavior changes all of a sudden, when he or she does not want to be touched.
When the child does not want to go somewhere, or just stay`s in his or her room
then it is very important that you talk with your child, be open, listen to what they say
and no matter what " believe them" if and when they disclose to you.
Love is patient;
love is kind;
love is not envious or boastful,
arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way;
it does not rejoice in wrongdoing,
but rejoices in the truth.
It bears all things,
believes all things,
hopes all things,
endures all things.
Love never ends.
