EFL Lessons about Sports

by Gail Shuster-Bouskila and David Snipper

Please feel free to use any of the material we have included. Most of it was used with 7th and 8th graders in heterogeneous classes. We have also included material for higher levels, especially useful for "native speakers".  This unit includes the domains of Social Interaction, Presentation and Appreciation of Culture.  The standards should be chosen after considering the level of the students involved.  Our material is most appropriate for the Intermediate and Proficiency levels of the New Israeli EFL Curriculum.

This lesson plan can be used with the following topics:

      1. Any unit dealing with sports
      2. Olympics season
      3. Maccabia or HaPoel Games

    BACKGROUND:

Since 1996 was an "Olympic year", I thought it would be meaningful to have the information from the Olympics incorporated into our English lessons. Fortunately there was a wealth of material, that allowed us to spend the last 2 weeks of the year on this subject. These lessons would then help them to understand the English used in the Olympics.

One of the sports teachers, David Snipper, helped me with the written material and to organize "Olympic Sports Day" close to the end of the year. Each class became representative of an English speaking country. On that day they all had to dress in the colors of their country, to create a cheer in English and make or bring any other things they thought would represent the country. Each student also filled out an "Official Competitors Identity Card" not for security reasons, but that is what would happen in the real Olympic Village.  The games began and we all had a splendid time!
