COOPING at USJS: Theory and Practice
One of the central aspects of the Utah School of Jewish Studies is
that it is a parent-participation, or 'coop', program. There are many reasons
why parent involvement is crucial for the success of the program:
-
When parents observe what their children are doing in school,
they are better able to assess the children's interest level, participation,
behavior, and progress, and, generally, see whether the program is meeting
their needs.
-
When parents are involved, they can better evaluate the teaching
quality and curriculum, and provide informed input into improving the program.
-
Parents can learn! Several parents are already taking advantage
of our excellent Hebrew language instruction to educate themselves and
to be better equipped to help their children learn.
-
By showing interest in their children's education, parents communicate
the message that what their children are doing is valuable and important;
this will surely translate into genuine enthusiasm and pride on the part
of the kids.
As for specific duties of coopers, there are only a few and these are
listed below. As a cooper, you should consider your main responsibility
to be participating in your children's classes, supporting the teachers,
providing one-on-one help to children who may need it, helping with discipline
when necessary, assisting in the smooth transition between classes and
aiding at assemblies. Don't be afraid to take some initiative; the teachers
will be grateful and the children will all benefit from the additional
adult attention.
Specific duties are as follows:
-
One parent needs to be on 'hall duty' to supervise children who
may be out of their classrooms, especially for disciplinary reasons, and
to ring the bell for change of classes (4:45) and at closing time (6:00).
-
Parents may be called upon for last-minute xeroxing and/or collating
of materials; if a trip outside the building is necessary, make sure at
least one parent remains 'on duty' at the school.
-
One parent must stay until every child is picked up after school,
and make sure the building is left clean*, trash is removed to the dumpster
behind the building (on Thursdays only, unless there is excessive trash),
windows are closed, all lights are out upstairs and downstairs (unless
a church meeting is in session when you leave), and the doors are locked
and closed. (Saul and Rafi have keys; get one of them to lock the door
when they leave, so that you will only need to close it behind you. Make
sure you don't get locked out before everyone else leaves!)
*Cleanup involves putting chairs and any other items that have been
moved back where they were found, picking up stray papers and 'lost' items
(leave these in a conspicuous place in assembly area), and vacuuming if
necessary (there is a vacuum cleaner in the closet of Mazal's classroom.)
IMPORTANT: You must keep track of your
cooping commitment - nobody will be calling to remind you. If, for any
reason, you cannot be there as scheduled, get someone to replace you. In
an emergency, call Carol (322-3836) or Debbie (364-3856) so that we can
make sure that the building is not left unattended. When you coop, please
make sure to mark your cooping hours by initialing next to your name, or
adding your name in the appropriate space, on the schedule posted outside
Room . It is very important (for funding purposes) that we keep an accurate
record of volunteer hours. Also, for those who cooped in the Fall, please
record on the last page of the posted schedule what your remember (dates,
estimated hours volunteered).
Finally, you are encouraged to stay at school and participate even
when you are not officially on duty. It will benefit all of us. If you
are one of the few people we did not succeed in contacting, or have scheduled
fewer than 2 hours per month (our suggested minimum requirement), please
call Debbie (364-3856) or Carol (322-3836) and volunteer for some of the
less fully covered slots (see schedule below). Thank you all!
Sincerely,
The Parent Coop Committee
