LOUISA AMALIE SEITZ

Mother of Anna Josephine (Herold) Schneider

Louisa Amalie Seitz was born in Hardheim, Germany, on 2 Apr 1854. She was the fourth of 10 children (and 3rd daughter in succession) born to farmer Johann Alois Seitz and Maria Josepha Popp.

Louisa was 22 when she married 24-year-old farmer Johann Eugen Herold (22 Nov 1852--27 Apr 1931) on 9 Jul 1876. A son, Robert Herold had been born two years prior, on 15 May 1784. Thirteen more children followed.

According to her granddaughter, Gabriella Weniger, Louisa died from peritonitus after severely cutting her leg, which had to be amputated, while working in the fields. She died at the age of 62 on 10 Sept 1916.

JOHANN ALOIS SEITZ

Grandfather of Anna Josephine (Herold) Schneider

Johann Alois Seitz is listed in the Hardheim Familybook as a furrier by trade, following in the footsteps of his father. He was born in Hardheim on December 5th, 1819. His parents were Johann Seitz and Maria Elizabeth Erbacher.

On 11 May, 1847, he married Maria Josepha Popp (25 Jan 1825--20 Oct 1897), the daughter of Georg Ignaz Popp and Maria Josepha Bundschuh. The Seitz and Popp families were neighbors and their homes are still standing in Hardheim.

For reasons unknown, Alois Seitz emigrated to the United States sometime after 1865. I believe the time was probably around 1878-79. At least two (possibly three) of his ten children (only four survived infancy) also emigrated. These were Karl Emil and Maria Josepha. At time time I am not certain whether his eldest son, Gustav Adolf, made the trip. Alois' eldest surviving daughter, Louisa Amalie remained in Hardheim, marrying Johann Eugen Herold (22 Nov 1852--27 Apr 1931) on 9 Jul 1876 at the age of 22.

But what of Alois' wife, Maria Josepha? It does not appear that she made the journey, for she died in Hardheim on 26 October, 1897. Or, did she accompany him and return to Germany after his death on 14 September, 1887?
