Anna Josephine Herold
Wife of Otto Joseph Schneider

Anna Josephine Herold was the sixth of fourteen children born to Johann Eugen Herold and Louisa Amalia Seitz. Anna, born in Hardheim, Germany (Baden), on 27 February, 1884, was named for a previous daughter named Anna Josephine, who had died in 1880 at the age of three.

Anna's sister, Karoline, was only sixteen when she left her family for America. She came back for Anna several years later. They were assisted by their uncle, Karl Emil Seitz, who had emigrated many years earlier with his father, Johann Alois Seitz.

Anna found work in New York as a maid, until a chance meeting with Otto Joseph Schneider on a streetcar led to their marriage in 1908. Over the next 14 years she bore seven children and suffered the tragedy of a miscarriage of her last child.

The modest living Otto made did not permit Anna to visit her family in Hardheim until in the 1950s. By then, only one brother, Wilhelm Herold, was still alive. Anna survived her husband, who died in 1942, twenty-five years, dying in Northport on 2 April, 1967. She had lived to bury her oldest son, Herman Schneider (d. 28 D 1963), and her youngest son, Arthur Schneider, followed her to the grave a month later.
