John & Mary Power
Grandparents of Mary Margaret Landrigan

John Power was the grandfather of Mary Margaret (Power) Landrigan. He was born in Ireland and emigrated to Prince Edward Island. His wife's name was Mary Larkin. She was also born in Ireland.

The 1861 PEI Census lists only the head of household by name; the rest are merely recorded by gender and age bracket. Living with John Power (age 45+), laborer, are 8 persons (could include family, boarders & servants, all Roman Catholic:
2 males under the age of 5 2 males between 5 and 16 1 female between 5 and 16 1 female between 21-45 1 female 45+

Interestingly, the census indicates only 1 of the 8 persons were born in Ireland; 7 natives of PEI. Later Censuses will dispute these numbers.

The 1881 PEI Census lists the ages of both John and Mary Power as 64, which would place their dates of birth at about 1817. James & Mary Landrigan, and their two eldest children, Mary Margaret & John, are enumerated with them:

1881 Prince Edward Island
POWER, John [age 64, b. IRE, RC, profession: laborer]
POWER, Mary [Wife, 64, b. IRE, RC]
LANDRIGAN, James [SL, 27, b. PEI, RC]
LANDRIGAN, Mary [D, 27, b. PEI, RC]
LANDRIGAN, Mary [GD, 3, b. PEI]
LANDRIGAN, John [GS, 2, b. PEI]

The 1891 PEI Census lists both John and Mary Power as 80 years of age, which would places their dates of birth at about 1811, a six year difference from the 1881 Census. As James Landrigan is not enumerated with them, he might have already left for the United States. This census was taken in April of 1891; Mary and her children sailed for America the following October.

1891 Prince Edward Island
POWER, John [age 80, b. IRE, RC, profession:laborer]
POWER, Mary [Wife, 80, b. IRE, RC]
LANDRIGAN, Mary [D, 34, b. PEI, RC]
LANDRIGAN, John [GS, 11 b. PEI]
LANDRIGAN, Joseph [GS, 9, b. PEI]
LANDRIGAN, Mary [GD, 13, b. PEI]
LANDRIGAN, Lewis [GS, 7, b. PEI]

How many children did John and Mary Power have? Obviously, there was at least one daughter, Mary Power, who was born in August of 1852 and who married James P. Landrigan. The date of Mary's birth was taken from her grave in Huntington, NY.

The only clues as to other Power off-spring come from the baptismal records of Canadian-born Landrigan children and the Canadian Census:

Patrick Power:
Patrick Power was the God-father of Joseph Landrigan. When the 1881 PEI Census was taken, a Patrick Power, born about 1836, was living on the same street as John and Mary Power in Charlottetown, and was the second family recorded after them.

1881 Prince Edward Island
POWER, Patrick [age 45, b. IRE, RC, profession: carpenter]
POWER, Elizabeth [Wife, 35, b. Ontario, RC]
POWER, John T. [S, 16, b. PEI, RC]
POWER, Patrick K. [S, 14 b. PEI]
POWER, Richard J. [S, 11, b. PEI]
POWER, Margaret [D, 8, b. PEI]
POWER, Mary [D, 6, b. PEI]
POWER, Edward J. [S, 3, b. PEI]
POWER, Elizabeth J. D, 1m, b. PEI]

In 1887, when Patrick Power and his wife, Elizabeth Hannoway, baptized their son, John Thomas Power, the godparents were "Patrick Power" & "Mrs. James Landrigan." A daughter, baptized in 1881 was sponsored by "John Power" and "Mary Ann Landrigan."

By the time of the 1891 PEI Census, Patrick and Elizabeth had added two more sons, Daniel (age 7) and John (age 4). They are still neighbors of John and Mary Power, with Richard Power and family (see below) sandwiched between them.

John Power was the God-father of Mary Margaret Landrigan. This could have been Mary's grandfather, John Power, or a cousin or uncle.

Mary Jane Power was the God-mother of Mary Margaret Landrigan. Could she be the "Jane Power" who was witness at the marriage of James and Mary (Power) Landrigan in 1877?

Richard Power. When the 1901 Canadian Census was taken, John Power, age 90, is now listed as a "widower" and living with his son, Richard Power (b. 11 Jan, 1837 in Newfoundland). John Power lists no date of birth, but would be c. 1811, which agrees with the information given on the 1891 Census. Both the 1881 PEI Census and the 1891 PEI Census list Richard Power as the next family enumerated to John Power. So, it is a pretty safe conclusion that he is brother to Mary Ann Landrigan.

1881 Prince Edward Island
POWER, Richard [age 30, b. NEWF, RC, profession: carpenter]
POWER, Catherine [Wife, 30, b. PEI, RC]
POWER, Mary* [D, 7, b. PEI, RC]
POWER, John^ [S, 6, b. PEI]
POWER, Joseph+ [S, 4, b. PEI]
POWER, Margaret [D, 2, b. PEI]

[notes: *listed as Mary Ellen on the 1891 Census and having been born 27 Apr 1870 on the 1901 Census; ^date of birth given as 29 Aug 1875 on 1901 Census and married to "Ellen"; +not listed on the 1891 Census]

Catherine Power was the God-mother of Ethel Maude Landrigan. Richard Power's wife?
