The Ministries of Education in the Circumpolar North have formed a coalition to focus on ways to improve the education of Native Peoples in the Circumpolar North. Members of this coalition include the Ministries of Education in Alaska; The Yukon Territory, The Northwest Territories, Northern Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada; Greenland; Finland; Norway; Sweden; and Russia.
The coalition members meet every two - three years, with the host ministry serving as the chairperson. A drum, created and donated by the Yukon Tlingit (Yukon Territory, Canada), is passed from the current chair to the new chairperson at each formal meeting of the Education Ministers. The outgoing chair is the Minister of Education from Greenland and the incoming chair is the Minister of Education in Finland. The passing of the drum will occur at the September 14 - 16, 1998 meeting to be held in Rovaniemi, Finland.
There is a "Conference Forum" that will enhance asynchronous communications (the ability to carry written communication over an extended period of time without regard to time or place). There is also a "Chat Room" available that permits real time interaction to occur.
