Going to the Library

Lately my son A.J. and I have been making regular trips to our local library at King's Park. At first, the main attraction was the water fountain. A.J. loves to find stepstools throughout the library and drag them over to the water fountain so he can reach the switch and drink at the same time. Without the stepstool, my son can press the switch, but he is only tall enough to wet his hands in the flow (this is a fun activity too, but it seems to annoy Mama when his sleeves get wet).

Recently, though, my son has realized that libraries contain BOOKS! And not only do they have a section with big, heavy books full of lots of words and few pictures (Mama seems to like these for some reason), but they also have a section with small books that have LOTS of pictures! This section also has a wooden clock with hands that move, foam letters and numbers, and chairs that are just the right size for A.J. to sit in. Sometimes A.J. sits and plays with the toys, and other times he pulls out books at random and asks me to read them.

I'm hoping my son's budding interest in books will continue. I love reading more than anything else; it's why I majored in literature in college and why I enjoy my day job as a writer-editor so much. Whenever I have a rare hour of free time, I'm hard pressed to decide whether I should spend it catching up on sleep or catching up on books. My husband jokes that whenever I get deep into a book I start to phase out; he jokes that he can only see a book hanging in mid-air, with the pages turning from time to time. Perhaps some day my son will grow to love books as much as I do. I hope so.     PEGGY HU'S READING LOG
