MARS ATTACKS!

I like comedy and I like science fiction. Mars Attacks! has it both in one. Though the story line of this flick as a sci-fi is not very unusual or inventive (the basic plot, of course), it is strongly backed up by the comic part.

Perhaps it was thought to have just a usual story. After all, it is a parody. And parodies must have a movie to make fun of. And this film revives the fine tradition of a 1950s and 1960s horror movie, where there was a monster in every poodle of dark water or a mysterious cavern. Though the effects these oldies show might seem funny, once they really scared people. We just got used to those incredible monstrosities shown in today's horror and science fiction.

WHAT, WHERE AND WHY (MOST PROBABLY)

Planet Mars, the strange red "neighbour" of the Earth, was always a mystery. After the famous English author Herbert George Wells wrote his "War of Worlds", people got used to that Mars might be inhabited by Martians, naturally a civilization more developed than ours.

Maybe it was the name of the planet - Mars - which was also a name of Roman god of war, maybe it was that work of H. G. Wells, maybe both, that made people think that if there were any Martians on Mars, they would certainly be aggressive. And what would be their target if there was a day they left their planet? The paradise of peace and everything one needs - the Earth! Their arrival would result in an unreal, unimaginable and ruthsome massacre of everything that walks or generally moves too fast to be friendly.

This basic idea outlines the Mars Attacks! story. Martians, finally uncovering that they really exist under the surface of Mars, set off for the Earth. Naive Earthlings, used to make peace between each other, try to confrontate them peacefully. But when the dove of peace comes out, everything screws up hard way and Martians start to slay anything and everything around them. The characters, mostly big stars, are butchered one by one, and taken into the Martian ships where they undergo incredible genetic experiments, which, though they give them back life, change them into picturesque freaks of "nature".

The Martian flag is driven through the President of the United States (Jack Nicholson) without any respect to his authority, the scientist Donald Kessler (Pierce Brosnan) becomes a head without body and a head of a girl (can't remember which one - I believe it was the reporter) is put on a body of a cat...

As simply as the story begins, as simply it ends. The end is crazy as the whole story is, but thats exactly what I like on this movie. It is put so simply and straightforwardly that it seems that it was really made in 1950s. And I think that is the biggest success this movie could ever have.

THE MOVIE SCRIPT

Unfortunately, besides it is crazy and weird movie, it is also quite a recent one. Thats why I cant offer you more than an excerpt from the (tran)script I found on the Web (I cannot remember where I found it but it was on a GeoCities page - please let me know where to give credit to the author - or the one who copied it...).
