Gibson is found guilty of poor prognostication! Warning: big scans ahead!
The ad copy says "Welcome to Ibanez's shape of the future". The Ibanez XV500 came with a "top-lok" system (no further details) and a V5 pickup. "Shape of the future"? Man! Someone must have anticipated a very violent future indeed! You could poke out someone's eye with the XV500 if this baby was aimed in the wrong direction! On the other hand, there's something to be said for an instrument that can also serve as a weapon - if I were in a fight for my life, I'd rather be swinging a XV500 than a vintage Stratocaster. I think my accountant would agree. |

Et tu, Gibson? Looks like everyone was into far-out shapes back in 1985. The Futura was hailed as being "Gibson's shape of things to come". Speaking from a vantage point some 13 years up the road, it looks to me like what the future REALLY wanted was more Les Pauls and ES-335s. Anyway, the Futura had one high output humbucking pickup at the bridge and one humbucking pickup at the nose ("nose?" - who wrote this promo copy?). Oh my! Is that a whammy bar unit I spy nestled on the bridge? Anyone ever SEE one of these, much less play one?
If so, I'd love to hear the details. Email the Stratomaster.
