When a prospective Weaver interviews to join the craft, one of the requirements is that they create a sample of their descriptive work - a description of some sort of Weavercraft-like item. This page is a repository for those audition pieces. Enjoy!

Audition pieces are available for the following Weavers:

Amina: Portrait Tapestry

You see before you a small tapestry woven in tones of grey. A man sits behind a table, captured in the act of raising his cup in toast. He is dressed in a light shaded tunic, with the cuffs embroidered in a shade of grey so dark it is almost black. The cavern behind him is darker near the bottom left, and brighter to the top right, as though lit by a glow off to that direction.

What grabs your attention as you look at this work are the man's eyes. His face, while reasonably well captured, doesn't have the same effect on you as those almost-living slate-grey eyes. If you knew this man, you might find them hauntingly, almost frighteningly familiar. They are vibrant -- full of life and joy, and something else. Something powerful that you can't quite put a name to. Those eyes are unmistakable to those who knew the man - it is Amina's father, D'vin.

You can see that while the transition of shade at the bottom of the tapestry is done reasonably well, closer to the top it becomes more disjointed. The weave near the top too is not as tight as closer to the bottom. These two things give the impression that the weaver lost patience near the end. The thread is decently spun, but it is uneven in places and a bit too coarse overall. As well, the weaver seemed to have problems with some of the middle tones of grey, in many places it seems darker or lighter th an it should be.

Broccal: Tunnelsnake Cloak

This is a leathern cloak which falls in warm folds to the wearer's ankles. The exterior is sturdy wherhide leather dyed a muted blue. The inside is of a red wool which is seamlessly sewn to the leather. The wool padding appears thick enough to keep him warm even in the frozen nothingness of *between*. Along the outside hem runs a series of red woolen embroidered tunnelsnakes.

Cinzia: Stuffed Toys

Two stuffed toys sit side by side, separate entities yet seeming to belong as a pair rather than individual pieces. Even so, the expressions given to them give the impression more of wary adversaries waiting for the right moment to pounce upon one another than companionable friends. The first toy is a seated canine pup with floppy ears made of light steel blue and eggshell white gingham. The paws are rounded and not detailed in any way, serving their purpose in keeping the figure propped up. Two black buttons have been sewn onto the head for eyes while a shaped bit of black felt has been attached for the nose. The pinkish-red tongue is also made of felt. Stitched around the canine's neck is a width of ebony fabric for a collar with a small disk of a golden harvest dyed material for the tag. Embroidered in small sienna brown letters to fit on the tag is the word 'Gingham'. Sitting beside the pup, on its left, is a similarly sized feline crafted of a pale pink, floral patterned calico. Like the pup, the paws on the kitten are not elaborately detailed. Two blue buttons represent the eyes, a triangle of pink a shade darker than that of the fabric has been sewn on for the nose and a little hint of red gives the impression of the tip of the tongue. Eight thin strands of yarn, four drooping on each side, have been included to represent whiskers. A thin width of ivy green around the feline's neck represents its collar with a disk of heather gray for the tag. The midnight blue embroidery on the tag reads 'Calico'.

Cyllan: Wine-Red Dress

This is a dress of heavy, dark wine-red brocade which would compliment many people's colouring and skin colour. The neckline of the bodice is square and simple, although fairly low. It is decorated by a complex braid and knot pattern of royal and midnight-blues, which twists and entwines itself into various patterns, all pleasing to the eye. The sleeves are made of some lighter, gauzy material in the same colour as the brocade, they look like they would cling to your arms, ending in a delicate point at the wrists. A knot of midnight-blue has been sewn here as well. The skirt of the dress is practically full and is gathered slightly at the sides, into knots which match the decoration of the bodice. A line of the knot and braid pattern encircle the waist, dipping forward slightly at the front.

Evaine: Dark Blue Dress

Evaine is wearing a nice, dark blue dress. The bodice is fitted, but not too tight, with a modestly scooped neckline, long fitted sleeves, and full, floor-length skirts. On one side the dark blue overskirt is gathered up a bit to show the light blue under skirts below.

Farilan: Landscape Tapestry

This small tapestry, measuring around one meter square, depicts a crude landscape. The borders are harper blue, with some gold twined inside it. Inside that border is another one, this one light greenish. The picture in the middle looks like a small landscape. There is a small green pasture going across the bottom of it. A crude tree with something looking like branches are depicted in the middle of it. Behind them several steep mountains rise above the background, and a blue line traces down between them , symbolising a river.

Fiona: Shawl Sampler

As you look closely at this knitted shawl, you notice its rather off-balance appearance. Knitted in bands throughout the garment are a multitude of different patterns, starting with more elementary designs at one end, and moving on to more complex ones at the other. Slight fraying mars the simpler end, which is gray with time and wear, while the designs toward the more complicated end are tight and fresh, as if finished only yesterday. In fact, you note that the needles are still in place in the fabric, indicating that this is a work in progress.

Gemydia: Deep Burgundy Dress

Today she is wearing a rather spectacular dress, that accents all her curves. The dress is a deep burgundy that is low cut in the front, backless and almost touches the floor. It is trimmed with pearls along the hem and cuffs of the short sleeves.

Along both sides of the V-neck is embroidered flowers that entwine down and around her body to become one at her waistline. Her waist is surrounded by a silver chain and she wears an identical chain around her neck. Dangling from this necklace is a silver dragon, with his wings spreed slightly. On her feet she wears soft wherry-hide shoes.

Lirika: Vegetable Tapestry

The pattern on this small tapestry, which could also be used on the floor as a rug, is very eye-catching, though it usually takes a second glance to figure it out. The design is quite original, and another look shows that it depicts a selection of larger-than-life sized vegetables! The veggies are arranged in an abstract way that is pleasing to the eye, but are not shown in proportional size to each other. Two long fingerroots are the main feature, done in varying shades of orange wool. Not quite parallel to each other, but not overlapping either, the fingerroots run from near the top right-hand corner, down to the lower end of the tapestry, near the left side. A number of mushrooms, a bright pepper, a whiteroot and several tubers, shown over or under or around the fingerroots, complete the design. The background is an off-white wool, with a strand of intertwined blue. This is a hooked tapestry, not woven, with quite a low pile. Most of the loops have been left uncut, and are a little uneven.

Mammaw: Sweater

This sweater, made especially for those who like simple things, is lightweight and very simply designed. It's a pull-over sweater made of a lightweight wool, used more for decoration than for warmth. As you look at it, you notice two pinstripes of light blue along the sleeves and collar as well as four light blue woolen bones along the chest area in imitation of buttons; otherwise the sweater is dark blue.

Maura: Dolly Collection

This is a collection of two cloth dolls, and various outfits for them. One of the dolls is clearly quite old and well worn, her face smuged, one eye missing, and her smile sewn in with two slightly different colors. The sceond doll is newer, but not quite as expertly made. The seams around the hands and feet are a little uneven, but the stitches seem firm. One eye is slightly above the other, but the embroidery is careful and neat.

There are several dresses in the collection, ranging from a simple and worn tunic made from a rough and non-descript in color cloth, to a more complicated `formal' dress. The fromal dress seems to be fitted for the newer doll. There is a great deal of embroidery on the skirt, and as the stitches progress around the hem, it's clear that the seamstress gets better with practice.

Mirtia: Seashore Outfit

Note: This description has been modified from its original form to correct spelling and other teeny technical errors.

This is a tunic and harem pants set. The tunic is of a heavyish cotton fabric which is dyed a beautiful green-blue color. There is white embroidery at the neck and cuffs which looks like cresting waves, and the cuffs are fastened with tiny wooden buttons that are shaped like shipfish. The pants are made from a lighter fabric that is dyed white. The pants have the same style of embroidery down the legs and arounds the cuffs, but the thread is the same color as the fabric of the tunic. There are also tiny shipfish-shaped buttons holding the cuffs at the ankles closed. A white belt with a shipfish buckle completes the ensemble. At first glance, the outfit looks great, but closer inspection shows the buttons to be carved by a less than experienced hand, and the embroidery isn't exactly uniform.

Morayne: Sunrise Tapestry

Your eye catches this fine tapestry. You wonder why you hadn't paid much attention to it before, as it immediately entrances you with its depths. The scene depicts as imminent sunrise over Benden River, framed by a scarlet red border. Light has begun to streak across the sky and scintillate over the watersm but it remains dark enough to pick out the constellations in the autumn night. (Curiously, the constetllations look painstakingly accurate, as if a StarSmith had plotted them.) The colors of the night are bold and dark, somehow flowing into the brighter, softer colors of dawn.

Nalaya: Forest Green Frock

This frock is colored the deepest forest green, like summer leaves and mossy hollows, made of fine wool and lined with matching soft sisal for comfort. It is floor length with a full circle skirt beginning at a high narrow waist and falls in multiple gentle pleats. The skirt is of a slightly lighter-weight wool, swirling irridescently and appearing to change from black-green to forest and back again as you look at it from different angles. The neckline is wide and rounded at mid-height, and decorated by glossy ebony cloth cut into a single thin ribbon and weaved in and out of the edging. The bodice is plain but fitting, and the waistline is gathered with another of the black ribbons, ending in a small bow with trailing ends right below the bosom. The shoulders float out into puffy sleeves, which are gathered in just below the elbow and are tight from the elbow to the wrist, again woven with the black ribbon in a weaved pattern. The cuffs of the sleeves are edged with shiny ribbon, as it is the hem of the skirt - the ribbon adds contrast and interest to the whole dress. It has a fairly dressy look, thought remaining simple, sensible, and warm enough for a northern climate.

Tarma: My Beloved Finn

This is a small tapestry, about a yard square, and was done as a weaving with additional embroidery added.

The subject of the piece is a small feline, apparently curled up to sleep ona red rug which is set in a patch of sun. The cat is a dark tabby color with stripes on his head, back, and most of his legs. His belly, under his chin, and his lower legs are white, however, and the viewer can clearly see this because the cat is laying on his side facing toward the viewer. His tail, which appears to be abnormally short and knotted several times, is tucked against his body, and his feet are curled up and tucked in. He appears to be healthy, though perhaps a bit overweight.

The piece was obviously done by someone who loved the cat, and this loving attention to detail really shows. The nose, and just the tip of a protruding tongue, are embroidered in a lovely shade of pink, and long white wiskers have been carefully added in delicate stitching. Under the cat, in blue stitching, are the words, "My Beloved Finn". The cat appears to be so happy, so peacefully and blissfully asleep, that viewers invariably smile.

At the very bottom of the piece, very small and in the right side corner, is stitched the artists name - "Tarma". The skill level is excellent, and anyone would be proud to have such a well done piece hanging on their wall.

Tasmin: Spiffy Scarf

Tasmin's Spiffy Scarf is just that: spiffy. From the looks of it, this two hand-by-two hand sized piece of cloth is sewn together from lots of little scraps, although this is not immediately obvious because each scrap is carefully dyed to the same hue (a simply, uhm, regrettible shade of green). More interesting is the fact that the little scraps are sewn together with thread a different, but complimentary, shade (stock blue with a bit of the puke green from above), making a neatly outlined letter 'T'. It looks like Tasmin tried to fringe the edges, but instead managed to give it the appearance of a scarf chewed on by a wild animal. All in all, however, it is nothing less that a truely spiffy addition to an otherwise unremarkable outfit.
