Recent Acquisitions to the Collection

As my collection keeps growing, I’ll bring you up to speed on the latest bundles of loot I have acquired. The Godzilla room is a work in progress, both on the web and in real life.

October 10, 1999
Wow, eight months (one Chiller Show and one G-Con) since the last update. In no particular order, here are some of my collecting highlights from the past few months:
M1's Titanosaurus and Mechagodzilla II figures, very cool retro style. Each one included a mini version of the other.
Marusan's Gargantua brother figures, which I think are the best vinyl figuers available for Sanda and Gaira.
I scored a few more Marmit figures (at discount prices) including Space Gyoas, Pagos, Magma, Maganuron, G'55, G'54 (translucent green), and Matango.
The Fall'99 Chiller show and G2K are right around the corner, which means plenty of cool stuff on the horizon.

The Godzilla Room is two years old and keeps growing. The past three months have been busy ones in the world of Kaiju collecting. The release of Mothra 3 and Gamera 3 has unleashed loads of new kaiju goodies on the unsuspecting collector. I picked up the latest Bandai 6" figures which include: Godzilla '54, theater exclusive Mothra, Gamera '99, Irys and the Gamera box set. From Kaiyodo, I grabbed the Gamera, Battle Damaged Gamera and Irys figures. I found an interesting 18" tall Godzilla '89 figure by Concorde. Recent issues of G Fan and Kaiju Fan along with few of the latest candy toys also found their way into my collection.
On the video front I bought the Dai Majin trilogy, Godzilla vs Space godzilla, and Godzilla vs Destroyer. All are official domestic releases, the Majin films are even wide screen and subtitled.
I've been spending some time lurking on ebay and managed to score a few good deals on Ebirah and Varan figures by Marmit, a Majin re-production figure, and a Mothra Larve by Yamakatsu.

It's been half a year since I last updated this section so I'll just run through the acquisitions which stand out most in my mind from the past six months. There was one Chiller Show (loot pictured on the right), two Kaiju Cons/Fests, my Birthday and of course Christmas. which means the Godzilla room swelled considerably. Here is a run down in no particular order:
Kongzilla kit, the remaining godzilla Island figures, New Mothra and King Ghidorah figures from Mothra 3, a few issues of G-Fan and Kaiju-Fan, the RIC Godzilla proto-type figure, the Medicom G '54 Combat Joe figure, King Kong's Thronester kit, Marmit Godzilla from Ghidorah the 3 Headed Monster, A bunch of Godzilla DVDs, Godzilla and Ghidorah foam bones, the big Trendmasters G with the handle sticking out of it's back, a Gappa figure, M-1 Manda figure, Trendmaster Gamera figures, and various G '98 stuff

The first wave of new Bandai figures are in; Godzilla '92, Mothra Larva '92, Mecha-Godzilla '93, and King Ghidorah '91. The figures are part of the Godzilla Island line which is a tie in to a Japanese TV show that uses Bandai toys in its effects scenes. The figures are nicely sculpted (they appear to be the same sculpts as the "regular" Bandai figures) and are 2/3 the size of the "regular" Bandai figures.

There has been more Godzilla stuff around in the last month than you can shake a stick at, mostly the new "American Godzilla". I picked up a bunch of New-G stuff. Most notably Trendmasters Ultimate Godzilla. It's a nice big figure with a fantastic, resonating roar. I bought a few of the other new figures also. One of the best being "Shatter Blast Godzilla vs. the Rocket Launcher". The 6 inch figure is nicely sculpted and best of all, features a missle that fires when he opens his mouth. There's plenty of other stuff too, G-bandaids, lip balm, Taco Bell stuff....

The best thing about the new movie coming out is that I can go Godzilla hunting at local stores. I found some of the new video releases; Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla King of the Monsters (re-mastered in SP), Godzilla vs. King Ghidora ('91) and Godzilla and Mothra the Battle for Earth ('92). I picked up the five human figures from the Tri Star Godzilla film, and paid a visit to Taco Bell to get a collectors cup and jet fighter kids meal toy (yeah it's kind of lame but it was only 99 cents). The latest G-Fan also arrived this week.

The Spring Chiller Show. I did not get a very big haul this time around, but it was a good haul. I started off by completing the Headline Series with the Godzilla '98 bust (thanks Jim). I also picked up two other kits I've been looking for, Billiken's Godzilla 1975 and Kaiyodo's Gamera '96. Both kits really capture the look of the monsters. On the figure end I got the Marmit Godzilla '62 and the M-1 Godzilla '64 (blue version). I also picked up another Bandai King Kong to kit bash for a planned diorama with the Kaiyodo Godzilla '62 kit. The latest Kaiju Fan found its way into my collection also. For novelties sake I bought a Godzilla lighter which chirps and spits out a pretty intense little flame. The only non-kaiju item I got was the Gargoyles video (not the cartoon but, the made for tv movie from the seventies). Also my wife came home with the candy tubes promoting the new Godzilla flick. Each one had a cheasy G related toy as a stopper on the tube (although the light up eye is kind of cool).

Again, I've let too much time lapse between entries. The Chiller Show is just around the corner so I figured I better clean the slate, so here goes...
I got a few goodies in the mail recently, the Mothra candy toys including both sets of the "Godzilla Encyclopedia". I plan on creating small dioramas with the figures so keep checking my model page. Speaking of models I purchased the Tsukuda Rodan kit from everybody's favorite Godzilla artist, Bob Eggelton. Speaking of Mr. Eggleton, I picked up all of the new Random House Godzilla books (even the kid books). These books are worth it for Bob's cover art alone, although they are a fun read too.
A trip to Yaohan plaza yielded a stuffed Godzilla, a Gamera bank and the 1998 Winter Hobby Japan EX which is chock full of cool new Kaiju kits.
To round it all off I got a wind-up Space Godzilla knock-off, a Reptar bean bag and the Reptar Burger King toy (I know it's not Godzilla but the inspiration is obvious). Oh and of course the latest G-Fan and Kaiju Fan issues.

January 1998
Santa and his helpers were very "Godzilla" generous this year. I hauled in three out of the four Godzilla Headline Series kits and an exclusive SD Space Godzilla model kit which was available only at Wonderfest in 1996 (thanks to my insane brother and Jim from Club Daiakiju). I also recievied the Godzilla "Then" and "Now " cds and three videos (Yog, King Kong Escapes and Atragon). I also did a little shopping for my self and discovered a few Godzilla Wars two packs and a cheap 99 cent Rodan knock off (actually Fire Rodan, it's molded in red plastic).

December 1997
It's been a while since I updated this page. One NYC Kaiju/G Con and one Chiller Show later my collection has grown some more. Some of the highlights include the Trendmasters repaint gift set which is the same as their regular set of 4" Godzilla Wars figures with new color schemes; a cool looking Godzilla skull; the JCPenny exclusive Missle Blaster set; a War of the Gargantuas kit by Paradise, a few more G-related cd sound tracks; the new Randomhouse Godzilla books; a nifty Japanese Gamera toy book; a Volks Rodan and Mothra kit (from the film Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster) and the new Bandai Aqua-Mothra figue and Showdown Beneath the Sea set. I even picked up a couple of extra Trendmasters figures to paint (I'll post pics of them soon).

May 25, 1997.
My card collection just expanded today (Thanks Barry!). I got the Godzilla Chromium Trading Cards from Amada. It is a 54 card set featuring pictures from the Godzilla films and publicity stills "enhanced" with chromium effects. I've been told that there is a corresponding sticker for each card in the series, which doubles the set to 108. Trying to hunt down a complete set of stickers is well beyond the effort I am willing to expend, especially since they look exactly the same as the cards.

May 15, 1997.
I finally found the three new 6" Trendmasters figures here in New Jersey. TM slipped a few Varan, Megalon and Baragon figures into recent shipments of the Godzilla Wars six-inch figures with sound assortments. They have been turning up all over the country at Kay Bee stores. These figures will also be available in the Doom Island line that TM plans to release later this year.

April 18-20, 1997
The weekend of the spring Chiller Theatre Show is the perfect way to get this ball rolling. I had a great time at the show and got some nice deals on several model kits. The crowning achievement of the weekend was finding an unassembled Monogram Godzilla kit (the Aurora re-issue) . This was just what I was looking for, a complete kit in a beat-up box. I plan on building it so I was happy to avoid the “mint-in-box-mark-up”. I found the perfect companion piece for the Monogram Godzilla, the Monogram King Kong re-issue. Kong is part of the Luminators series and is molded in hot pink (which will most certainly be painted).

I also found an HO scale Maser Cannon kit (from War of the Gargantuas). I’m not into car kits but I made an exception for this one. I was always a big fan of the outrageous weapons they would roll out to try and beat back the latest giant invader.

To top off my collection of model kits I picked up the Planet X Controller resin kit (Monster Zero is one of my favorite movies) and a vinyl Gigan kit by Wave. When completed Gigan will stand about 11” tall which is the same size as the Billiken Godzilla kits. For a change of pace I also bought the Toy Biz Ghost Rider kit (I could not pass up the $10 price tag).

I found two excellent resources for kit building too, Amazing Figure Modeler #7 and the Hobby Japan Winter 1997 EX issue. AFM is a magazine which if full of info and tips for figure modeling. Issue #7 has an article on the history of King Kong Kits. The Hobby Japan EX has some nice photos of the latest Japanese monster kits.

On the Toy front I bought the Bandai transforming Gamera. This is a cool figure. Gamera’s arms and legs fold up into the shell and his flipper/wings fold out to create the flying mode from G2. He roars too.

This show will probably be my last splurge for the near future. I have plenty of unbuilt kits to keep me busy for quite a while.
