Thirteen die in east China fire (04/7/2000) A fire which broke out Thursday morning in a hotel in Dezhou City, in east China's Shandong province, killed 13 persons and injured two others. Local sources said that the disaster took place at 1:00 am in a room on the 10th floor of the Meilihua Hotel. The blaze is thought to have been started by a careless smoker in Room 1011. The dead were hotel guests, a deputy manager of the hotel's night club, three security guards and a waitress. The fire was extinguished after two hours by the city's fire brigade. The 10th floor of the three-star hotel was entirely destroyed, but normal services are maintained in the rest of the hotel.
