One Fireman Dead, One Injured in Nanchang Fire - 1/19/2000

NANCHANG (Jan. 19) XINHUA - One fireman was reported killed and another seriously injured while fighting a fire early on January 18 at a timber-processing factory in the suburbs of Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province.

Xu Peilin, deputy-chief of a fire brigade, led his men to bring the fire under control, disregarding personal safety and sacrificing his life when the roof of the factory collapsed during the fierce fire.

Investigation into the cause of the blaze and its economic consequences is underway. This was the second large fire in Nanchang since last month, following one at a local cemetery cause by the burning of paper at a graveside, a traditional Chinese ceremony offering a sacrifice to the dead.
