October 2000 - Topics in this digest: - 1. CT State Police - Message: 1 -Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 20:40:21 -0000 Subject: CT State Police - All CT State Police troops are now operating on the new Motorola Astro 800Mhz Digital Trunked system, except for Troop B in Canaan, (coming soon). Most troops are simulcasting from the troop on the low band frequencies, but the cars are not simulcasted. All low band frequencies will be out of operation in about a year.

October 2000 newspaper article - State Police Like Their New Radios

-----------------------------------------------

From the connscan list - 31Oct00

I was traveling in the Southeastern region of CT last night and spotted two CSP cars with an antenna setup different from the ones I see at home near Danbury. The cars I saw last night had two 800 Mhz antennas mounted towards the rear of the roof. Mounted between the antennas was a GPS receiving antenna like those used on the NY state police cars (A small white disc about 3" in diameter). I was surprised because the cars from troop A only have a single 800Mhz antenna mounted in the rear center of the roof. Does anyone know why there would be an apparent difference in equipment being installed as part of the CSP TRS integration?

Message: 2 - Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 19:48:28 -0500 - Subject: Re: CSP cars with GPS? - GPS antennas are small disc antennas. They are most likely for the automatic vehicle tracking system. It is activated when the trooper signs online on the MDT. 2. The two 800 MHz antennas are most likely for the main radio and for the MDTs.

QV Dispatch

I am not sure how much you guys know about FD's in my area of CT (Northeastern Part of CT) but I will give you a quick run down. The Eastern part of CT Towns like, Woodstock, Putnam, Killingly, Plainfield are all dispatched by a regional dispatcher (QV). Fire Departments around the Willimantic Area are dispatched by regional dipsatcher (WW). Fire Departments around the Vernon, Tolland area are dispatched by regional dispatcher (TN)

Frequencies that the departments from QV use are as follows. 33.80 (Low band Tones) 152.005 (High Band Tones, sames as low band just have greater range) 33.90 (Main Fire Ground) 33.76 (Secondary Fire Ground, and used Incidents like, Brush Fires, Wires down, CO calls etc.) 33.88 (Main EMS channel) 33.74 (Secondary Fire Ground) 460.600 (QV UHF, many departments using this now)

TN and WW use the same frequencies except 460.600 (QV UHF) and also these following - 33.44 (Main Fire Ground For TN departments) 453.9875 (Vernon UHF that repeats 33.44 Works Great here alot of TN departments using this frequency.) 33.78 (Secondary Fire Ground for WW departments). QV, TN, WW all use the same fire and EMS codes. If anyone is interested in them let me know and I will post them. (This is March 2000 info from the IPN list)

See the Muddy River VFD website by Matt Kivela for extensive info on the QV Dispatch Center and other area dispatch centers - look under Radio Communications

I'm not sure of the PL. I've received something on that frequency with a PL of 186.2 but have not received enough to determine if it's fire or even local. I'm just a bit too far from New Fairfield to pick it up but I can occasionally receive stuff from the NYC area. -- ------- I believe they use it like Seymour uses 154.250 portable to portable for fire police. Meriden - Feb 2001

Feb 15, 2001, 10:08am To: [email protected] Subject: Meriden CT $600,000 Radio System February 2000 February 14, 2001 Panel tables proposal By Ralph Hohman Record-Journal staff MERIDEN - While the city considers a $600,000 upgrade of its two way police radio system, members of the Public Safety Committee said Tuesday that they wanted to make sure they weren't buying into yesterday's technology. "I was disappointed to hear that this upgrade is not a digital upgrade," said Joseph R. Galotti Jr. Galotti said anybody who has had cellular phones would likely favor digital over analog. "Are we going to be chasing the technology curve for the next 10 years?" he asked. Not necessarily, answered John E. Zaleski, a senior account manager with Motorola, which supplied the Police Department's current system and wants to do the upgrade. Motorola has given the city a rough estimate of $633,566 for the project, which would reduce, but not eliminate, dead spots in the system. "The movement is definitely going toward digital," said Zaleski. "But that entails replacing the whole system." The Public Safety Committee wanted to know just how much money, and tabled the proposal to give Motorola a month to prepare a rough estimate on digital conversion. Zaleski told the committee that going digital would cost at least twice as much as upgrading the analog system. Police Capt. David Ceneviva said 10 mobile units on order are analog, but with digital upgrade capability. And the department, he said, would replace the rest of its radios over time with digital ready equipment. Some municipalities, including Wallingford, have switched over to all-digital systems, Zaleski said. But Wethersfield is making an analog upgrade, and West Hartford did the same recently, he added. Digital has some advantages, Zaleski said, including more efficient encryption and caller identification capabilities. '"We can't tell them what their needs are," Zaleski said. "It usually ends up being a matter of needs and money." Ceneviva said the clarity of radio communication was not a problem with the current system. Dead spots were attributed to dips in terrain that cause signals to overshoot their targets. Zaleski said the problem is relative. From the 1960s through the 1980s, he said, the Police Department's low band radios (operating on 45.18 MHz) covered about 60 to 75 percent of the city. In the '60s, he said, "that was phenomenal, because before that there were no radios at all, and there were call boxes on the side of the road." About 10 years ago, he said, the city upgraded with Motorola to an 800 MHz system still in use that covers 85 to 90 percent of the city. The proposed upgrade, which would include two main transmitter sites on Dexter Street and Hanover Avenue, would ensure reliable coverage of 95 percent of the city, according to Motorola.
