CDF/County FD

A interagency agreement between San Louis Obispo County and CDF forms the basis for combining local VFD resources and CDF resources into a unified fire-fighting force to protect the rural areas. (Structural protection is provided to all unincorporated areas - wildland protection is provided to all unincorporated areas that are not located within the Los Padres Natl Forest). CDF provides wildland stations, staff, and equipment. The County provides structural firefighting equipment and pays for the on-call structural firefighters. CDF provides oversite for the entire operation. The CDF Dispatch Office dispatches CDF units and the CDF units on the CDF radio system. CDF Battalion Chiefs direct the structural and wildland fire operations. (I am not quite sure where the local VFD fire chiefs (if any) fit into the scheme).(Also - CDF engines do both structural and wildland firefighting)

I guess that the bottom line is basically this. In the winter, when there are no wildland fires, all incidents are handled by the VFDs using their structural engines. In the summer, CDF staffs their strucutural/wildland engines to augment the VFDs. [I should check to see if any of the stations actually completely close in the winter]

January 2001 info

San Luis CDF (SLU) provides personnel and administration for the County Fire Dept. Some stations house both County and CDF equipment. Both are dispatched out on CDF local net, 151.325. The County owns equipment and stations. Some CDF stations become County contract stations after fire season closes so they may remain open all year.

A couple of years ago Los Padres NF moved its dispatch and is now colocated with CDF dispatch in San Luis.

A new dispatch center is being built and when that is completed all fire agencies in the countywill be dispatched out of the one command center - at least that is the plan.

The county underwent a fire unit numbering reorganization. If you need the list I can send it to you.

The present County Fire net on 154.385 is simplex on five sites. The plan is to simulcast this and move all dispatching for the county to that frequency leaving CDF local open as a command channel.

Neighboring agencies all have the San Luis County frequency in their radios so that should not be a problem. I had heard that the county was going to add a repeater to this frequency but so far have not heard of any new frequencies.
