LEE TAKES COMMAND
June 01, 1862

Johnston attacked McClellan at Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), a few miles east of Richmond, May 31-June 1, 1862. In heavy fighting Johnston was wounded and his men were driven toward Richmond.

President Davis gave command of the Confederate army to General Robert E.Lee who had been serving him in an advisory capacity. Lee immediately planned to attack McClellan.

He first summoned Jackson from the Shenandoah Valley and then he proposed a difficult turning movement around McClellan's right flank, which was exposed above the Chickahominy River.
