HARRISON'S LANDING
July 01, 1862 thru August 15, 1862

After Lee was checked at Malvern Hill on July 01, 1862 McClellan was ordered by Washington authorities not to take the offensive with his weakened troops. He withdrew to the Union base at Harrison's Landing under the protection of Union gun boats. On August 14-15, 1862 the Third and Fifth Army Corps embarked from Harrison's Landing for Aquia Creek. August 14 to 19, 1862 the cavalry conducted operations covering the withdrawal of the remaining Union troops to the eastern area of the Peninsula. From August 20 to August 26 1862 the Fifth, Third, Sixth and Second Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac embarked from Newport News, Yorktown and Fort Monroe for nothern Virginia. A relative small force remained in Yorktown for the remainder of the war.
