The following periodicals publish news about the history and current life of Carpathian Germans.
- Karpatenjahrbuch.
A historical-cultural yearbook published by the KDL in Stuttgart since 1950. About 200 pages, with pictures. The
articles have footnotes and a solid scholarly niveau akin to US county historical societies. The price
is around DM 50 ($25) plus shipping. For US users, the OCLC Number is 1782745. A decennial index is available from the KDL.

- Karpatenpost.
A monthly about Carpathian German activities published by the KDL in Stuttgart/Germany since 1949. The articles deal
with current events, politics etc. concerning Carpathian Germans, and book reviews. There are obituaries as well.
An obituaries, marriage and birth index (the latter two vanished after 1970), is available from the KDL and from
myself for the years 1950-1970. For US library users, the OCLC Number of the Karpatenpost is 36578834.
- Heimatblatt.
Published since 1949 by the Carpathian German Landsmannschaft in Austria, now 6 times a year, this 40-50 pages periodical reports
the same kind of events as the Karpatenpost, but about Carpathian Germans living in Austria. Articles about the old homeland focus
more on the Pressburg area. The serial includes obituaries and book reviews. No index available at this time. There seems to
be no US library holding this valuable serial. Try to convince your local university librarian to include it!
- Karpatenblatt.
Published monthly since 1992 by the Karpatendeutscher Verein in der Slowakei. The articles focus on current news
for and about the 6-7,000 odd Carpathian Germans in Slovakia. For American library users, the OCLC
Number is 36578796. Cost about 25 DM per year. To order, write to KDV (address under Organizations).
- Sudetenland.
This 250-odd pages quarterly, published since 1958, focuses on the Sudeten and inner-Bohemian German areas
of Czecho-Slovakia, but provides solidly researches articles, e.g. from Fritz-Peter Habel, on topics that affected
Carpathian Germans as well. For US library users, the OCLC Number is 1696131.
- Globus.
This quarterly published by the VDA in Bonn, Germany, has short (2-3 page) articles about German
minorities abroad today. It has occasional articles about Carpathian Germans. For US library users,
the OCLC Number is 19006418.

The following books deal with the framework of the events that affected Carpathian Germans, and mention them in a

4. KARPATO-UKRAINE, BUKOWINA ETC.
There is nothing available in English, and very little in German. Although this website does not
normally list articles, the dearth of material about Carpathian Germans from the Karpatho-Ukraine
makes it advisable to do so.

Probably most of these publications are out of print. But they may be available by interlibrary loan
(Bibliotheks-Fernleihe) from libraries in Germany. Several may be available from the Karpatendeutsche
Landsmannschaft, Schloss-strasse 92/II, 70176 Stuttgart, Germany, or

Ask for the price list. The HB and the HiKo can be reached at the same address.
The Organizations listed above are not wealthy. When writing them, include enough to cover return
postage--2 dollar bills will do as airmail to the US costs DM 3 or $1.50. When ordering a book from the
USA, remember to include adequate money for postage, which is high in Europe (DM 10 for a book by surface mail).
To pay, do not use personal checks (cashing fees are very high) or Postal Money Orders (can't be cashed in Europe).
Use Money Orders sold by banks. When calculating the amounts in US-$, include the bank fee for changing the
currency and cashing the foreign money order. I usually look up the daily rate of exchange in the Washington Post,
and then add 15% to cover all fees.
Note: Few libraries in the United States have a Carpathian German collection. Usually, if at all, it is an odd book
here and there. But the University of Cincinatti has a decent number of books. Check their
catalogue at Langsam Library. When searching any cataloue,
remember that the changing fortunes of the area produced a salad of keywords, e.g. Germans--Carpathian
Mountains, Germans--Hungary, Germans--Czechoslovakia, Germans--Slovakia.
