Xena comes in six preconstructed starter decks. You only get 40 cards, but you don't need a massive arsenal to start with anyway. The ARC System is a universal set of rules for trading card games developed by Wizards of the Coast.

All ARC games are compatible. A card in the ARC system has two numbers on it: cost and power. The cost is how many Resources you need to activate that card; as in Magic, you can play one Resource per turn, so the low-cost cards are the only ones you'll see active for the first few turns.

The ARC system mandates that your initial draw of seven cards have at least two Resources; if you don't get them, reshuffle and draw again. The starter decks have 16 to 18 Resources out of 40 cards; and since no cards cost more than 6, you might be able to get by with fewer Resources.

[Xena] Resources can also soak up damage. In ARC games, when your opponent injures you, you lose cards from your hand equal to the attacking card's Power. Run out of cards and you lose! Naturally, you can block enemy attacks with your own characters.

The starters are all two-color decks; the colors in Xena appear to be Western (red), Eastern (green) and Supernatural (blue). Two of the six starter decks are:
