The W.S.B.G.C. contributes
both time and money to feed Washington State's population of elk. Many of
the elk that winter on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains have lost
tremendous amounts of habitat over the years. The WDFW regularly
winter feeds a few populations of elk, but usually for at least a couple of
specific purposes, to control agricultural crop damage in traditional areas, to
keep animals available for capture, health monitoring, and transplant, and to
provide public viewing and learning experiences. Such WDFW winter feeding
stations are at Oak Creek Wildlife Area, near Yakima and Joe Watt Canyon,
near Ellensburg.
