Growing Together
A Sun Shiny Day Group
Once
upon a time there was
a little grape stem
She was so glad to be
alive.
She drank water and minerals
from the soil and grew
and grew.
She was young and strong
and could manage quite
well...
All by Herself
But
the wind was cruel, the
rain was harsh,
And the snow was not one
bit understanding.
The little grape stem
experienced pain.
She drooped, weak and
suffering.
"It would be so easy
to stop trying to grow,
to stop trying to live,"
thought the little stem.
She felt poorly.
The
winter was long, and she
was weary.
But then the little stem
heard a voice.
It was another grape stem
calling out to her...
"Here, reach out,
hang on to me."
But the little stem hesitated.
What would this mean?
she wondered.
For you see, the little
stem had always managed
quite well...
All by herself.
Then
ever so cautiously, she
reached out toward the
other grape stem,
"See, I can help
you," it said.
"Just wind your tendrils
about me, and I will help
you lift your head."
And the little stem trusted.
Suddenly, she could stand
straight again.
The wind came...and the
rain...and the snow.
But when it came, the
little stem was clinging
to many other stems.
And although the stems
were swayed by the wind,
And frozen by the snow,
They stood strongly united
to each other
And
in their quiet strength,
they could smile and grow
One day, the little stem
said,
"Here, hang on...
I will help you
And another stem reached
up to the little grape
stem.
And together, all stems
grew...Leaves budded ...
flowers bloomed ...
And finally the grapes
formed....And the grapes
fed many.
Footprints in Time
Lauren Posey
Two
young lovers, Walking
on the sand,
Gazing at each other,
Talking hand in hand,
The prints they leave
behind them,
Marking memories of the
past,
The long beach laid before
them,
Hoping love will last,
The ocean captures the
footprints,
And erases them from the
shore,
Taking with it remembrances,
And leaving them with
more,
Many
years have passed,
Time flies when you're
having fun,
And before you know it
innocence fades,
And the teen years are
done,
Now she's back on the
beach,
Except she is alone,
Watching and waiting,
For the love that hadn't
grown,
She walks along the ocean,
Two footprints, not four,
Wondering where the laughter
went,
Why he didn't love her
more,
Then she stops to sit,
And draws his name in
the sand,
A celestial stranger comes
along,
And reaches out a hand,
Hesitantly she takes it,
And he listens to her
cries,
He's been there before,
He's heard many lies,
They decide to walk,
And she follows, not knowing
why,
Love
will always be reborn
again,
Even if it may die,
She is more cautious than
before,
And as she looks back
at the footprints,
She smiles seeing not
two, but four,
This time will be different,
Her heart trying to say,
Something magical happened,
She felt it the first
day,
Something clicked when
they touched,
A jolt from inside,
She knew he'd be there
always,
If she had something to
confide,
Now
here it is twenty years
later,
And his love for her,
Is now even greater,
He looks at her like the
first time they met,
And despite all the years
gone by,
They can never forget,
Those four special footprints,
That are never washed
away,
They'll stay forever on
her heart,
Until their dying day.
Death of an Innocent
Elizabeth Beeson
I
went to a party, Mom,
I remembered what you
said.
You told me not to drink,
Mom,
So I drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside,
Mom,
The way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive,
Mom,
Even though the others
said I should.
I know I did the right
thing, Mom,
I know you are always
right.
Now the party is finally
ending, Mom,
As everyone is driving
out of sight.
As I got into my car,
Mom,
I knew I'd get home in
one piece.
Because of the way you
raised me,
So responsible and sweet.
I
started to drive away,
Mom,
But as I pulled out into
the road,
The other car didn't see
me, Mom,
And hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the
pavement, Mom,
I hear the policeman say,
"The other guy is
drunk," Mom,
And now I'm the one who
will pay.
I'm lying here dying,
Mom....
I wish you'd get here
soon.
How could this happen
to me, Mom?
My life just burst like
a balloon.
There is blood all around
me, Mom,
And most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say,
Mom,
I'll die in a short time.
I
just wanted to tell you,
Mom,
I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom.
The others didn't think.
He was probably at the
same party as I.
The only difference is,
he drank
And I will die.
Why
do people drink, Mom?
It can ruin your whole
life.
I'm feeling sharp pains
now.
Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is
walking, Mom,
And I don't think it's
fair.
I'm lying here dying
And all he can do is stare.
Tell
my brother not to cry,
Mom.
Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven,
Mom,
Put "Daddy's Girl"
on my grave.
Someone should have told
him, Mom,
Not to drink and drive.
If only they had told
him, Mom,
I would still be alive.
My
breath is getting shorter,
Mom.
I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me,
Mom.
When I needed you,
you were always there.
I have one last question,
Mom.
Before I say good bye.
I didn't drin k and drive,
So why am I the one to
die?
Her Little Shadows
Unknown
I
saw a young mother
With eyes full of laughter
And two little shadows
Came following after.
Wherever
she moved,
They were always right
there
Holding onto her skirts,
Hanging onto her chair.
Before her, behind her-
An adhesive pair.
"Don't
you ever get weary
As, day after day,
Your two little tagalongs
Get in your way?
She
smiled as she shook
Her pretty young head,
And I'll always remember
The words that she said
"It's
good to have shadows
That run when you run,
That laugh when you're
happy
And hum when you hum -
For you only have shadows
When
your life's filled with
sun."
How
to Be Happy
by Unknown
Are you almost disgusted
with life, little man?
I'll tell you a wonderful
trick
that will bring you contentment,
if anything can
Do something for somebody,
quick!
Are
you awfully tired with
play, little girl?
Wearied, discouraged,
and sick-
I'll tell you the loveliest
game in the world,
Do something for somebody
quick!
Though
it rains like the rain
of the flood, little man
and the clouds are forbidding
and thick,
You can make the sun shine
in your soul, little man
Do something for somebody,
quick!
Though
the stars are like brass
overhead, little girl,
and the walks like a well-heated
brick
and our earthly affairs
in a terrible whirl,
Do something for somebody,
quick!
I
am Blessed Indeed
Og Mandino
Today upon a bus, I saw
a lovely girl, I envied
her:
She seemed so happy. And
I wish I were as fair.
And then, suddenly,she
rose to leave, and I saw
her hobble down the aisle,
She had one leg and wore
a crutch,
But as she passed, a smile.
Oh
God, forgive me when I
whine, I have two legs,
I am blessed indeed. The
world is mine!
Later,
walking down the street,
I saw a man with eyes
of blue.
But he just stood and
watched the others play.
So, I stopped a moment
and then I said,
"Why don't you join
the others, sir?"
But he looked ahead without
a word.
And then I knew he could
not hear.
Oh
God, forgive me when I
whine, I have two ears,
I am blessed indeed. The
world is mine!
And
later, I stopped to buy
some sweets,
The lad who sold them
had such charm,
I talked with him. If
I were late, it would
do no harm.
But as I turned to go,
he said to me,
"I thank you sir.
You've been so kind.
It's nice to talk with
folks like you."
"You see," he
said, "I am blind."
Oh
God forgive me when I
whine, I have two eyes,
I am blessed indeed. The
world is mine!
With
legs to take me where
I want to go,
With ears to hear the
things I need to know,
With eyes to watch that
radiant sunset glow.
Oh
God, forgive me when I
whine,
I
am blessed indeed!
The world is mine!
If You Have a Dream
Unknown
Don't
wait for some distant
day to come,
it may be too late before
you've even begun.
Not everyone will agree
with all you decide.
Be true to yourself first
and foremost.
The only important thing
in life is what you do
with the time you spend
here on earth.
Don't be afraid to follow
your desires,
they are not silly nor
selfish.
Take the time and do what
makes you feel alive.
Leave your fears and regrets
in the past,
for this is where they
belong.
Don't cloud today with
things that can't be undone.
You have no more control
over yesterday or tomorrow,
than you do the raging
of your passions.
Do not quiet these dreams
nor quench your desires.
For if you do, your journey
is ended.
You have only today to
begin anew and follow
your dreams.
For in the end all we
have are our memories.
When the twilight comes
to us, let there be,
No excuses, no explanations,
no regrets!
I Think I Can
Unknown
If
you think you are beaten
you are;
If you think you dare
not, you don't;
If you want to win but
think you can't;
It's almost a cinch you
won't.
If
you think you'll lose
you're lost;
For out of the world we
find
Success begins with a
fellow's will;
It's all in a state of
mind.
Life's
battles don't always go
To the stronger and faster
man,
But sooner or later the
man who wins
Is the man who thinks
he can.
It's Up to You
Unknown
One
song can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the
dream.
One
tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One
smile begins a friendship,
One handclasp lifts a
soul.
One
star can guide a ship
at sea,
One word can frame the
goal.
One
vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room.
One
candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer
gloom.
One
step must start each journey,
One word must start each
prayer.
One
hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you
care.
One
voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's
true.
One
life can make the difference,
You see, IT'S UP TO YOU!
Keep
Swimming
Unknown
Two frogs fell into a
deep cream bowl.
One was an optimistic
soul.
But the other took the
gloomy view.
"We'll drown,"
he lamented without much
ado,
and with a last despairing
cry,
he flung up his legs and
said "Goodbye."
Quote
the other frog with a
steadfast grin,
"I can't get out
but I won't give in,
I'll just swim around
till my strength is spent,
then I'll die the more
content."
Bravely he swam to work
his scheme,
and his struggles began
to churn the cream.
The
more he swam, his legs
a flutter,
the more the cream turned
into butter.
On top of the butter at
last he stopped,
and out of the bowl he
gaily hopped.
What
is the moral? It's easily
found...
If you can't hop out,
keep swimming around!

Moonlight
Ride
Unknown
Jenny was so happy about
the house they had found.
For once in her life 'twas
on the right side of town.
She unpacked her things
with such great ease.
As she watched her new
curtains blow in the breeze.
How
wonderful it was to have
her own room.
School would be starting,
she's have friends over
soon.
There'd be sleep-overs,
and parties: she was so
happy.
It's just the way she
wanted her life to be.
On
the first day of school,
everything went great.
She made new friends and
even got a date.
She thought, "I want
to be popular and I'm
going to be,
Because I just got a date
with the star of the team!"
To
be known in this school
you had to have a clout,
And dating this guy would
sure help her out.
There was only one problem
stopping her fate.
Her parents had said she
was too young to date.
"Well,
I just won't tell them
the entire truth.
They won't know the difference:
what's there to lose?"
Jenny asked to stay with
her friends that night.
Her parents frowned but
said, "All right."
Excited,
she got ready for the
big event.
But as she rushed around
like she had no sense,
She began to feel guilty
about all the lies,
But what's a pizza, a
party, and a moonlight
ride?
Well
the pizza was good, and
the party was great,
But the moonlight ride
would have to wait.
For Jeff was half drunk
by this time.
But he kissed her and
said that he was just
fine.
Then
the room filled with smoke
and Jeff took a puff.
Jenny couldn't believe
he was smoking that stuff.
Now Jeff was ready to
ride to the point,
But only after he'd smoked
another joint.
They
jumped in the car for
the moonlight ride,
Not thinking that he was
too drunk to drive.
They finally made it to
the point at last,
And Jeff started trying
to make a pass.
A
pass is not what Jenny
wanted at all
(and by a pass, I don't
mean playing football).
"Perhaps my parents
were right....maybe I
am too young.
Boy, how could I ever,
ever be so dumb."
With
all of her might, she
pushed Jeff away:
"Please take me home,
I don't want stay."
Jeff cranked up the engine
and floored the gas.
In a matter of seconds
they were going too fast.
As
Jeff drove on in a fit
of wild anger,
Jenny knew that her life
was in danger.
She begged and pleaded
for him to slow down,
But he just got faster
as they neared the town.
"Just
let me get home!
I'll confess that I lied.
I really went out for
a moonlight ride."
Then all of a sudden,
she saw a big flash.
"Oh God, Please help
us! We're going to crash!"
She
doesn't remember the force
of impact.
Just that everything all
of a sudden went black.
She felt someone remove
her from the twisted rubble,
And heard, "Call
an ambulance! These kids
are in trouble!"
Voices
she heard...a few words
at best.
But she knew there were
two cars involved in the
wreck.
Then wondered to herself
if Jeff was all right,
And if the people in the
other car were alive.
She
awoke in the hospital
to faces so sad.
"You've been in a
wreck and it looks pretty
bad."
These voices echoed inside
her head,
As they gently told her
that Jeff was dead.
They
said "Jenny, we've
done all we can do.
But it looks as if we'll
lose you too."
"But the people in
the other car?" Jenny
cried.
"We're sorry, Jenny,
they also died."
Jenny
prayed, "God, forgive
me for what I've done.
I only wanted to have
just one night of fun."
Tell those people's family,
I've made their lives
dim,
And wish I could return
their families to them."
"Tell
Mom and Dad I'm sorry
I lied,
And that it's my fault
so many have died.
Oh, nurse, won't you please
tell them that for me?"
The nurse just stood there-she
never agreed.
But
took Jenny's hand with
tears in her eyes.
And a few moments later
Jenny died.
A man asked the nurse,
"Why didn't you do
you best,
To bid that girl her one
last request?"
She
looked at the man with
eyes oh so sad.
"Because the people
in the other car were
her mom and dad."
This story is sad and
unpleasant but true,
So young people take heed,
it could have been you.
Never Far Away
Mary
M. Green
I'm
gone now, but I'm still
very near.
Death can never separate
us.
Each time you feel a gentle
breeze,
It's my hand caressing
your face.
Each time the wind blows,
It carries my voice whispering
your name.
When the wind blows your
hair ever so slightly,
Think of it as me pushing
a few stray hairs back
in place.
When you feel a few raindrops
fall on your face,
It's me placing soft kisses.
At night look up in the
sky and see the stars
shining so brightly.
I'm one of those stars
and I'm winking at you
and smiling with delight.
For never forget you're
the apple of my eye.
